Terrorism is not a Muslim Act, but of Terrorists

on Friday, September 27, 2013

Terrorism is an act of cowardice and anybody can engage in it. The blanket criticisms often leveled against the Muslims is more often than not devoid of concrete evidence. The West is always quick to rise to the occasion of attacking the east of any act of violence, and this is something unacceptable. The relationship between the West which is largely dominated by the whites, and the East which is largely dominated by Muslims and red Indians and Arabs is awash with suspicion, accusations and counter-accusations. Even as terrorism is used as a scapegoat, religious conflicts which started many centuries ago is often ignored.

The situation especially the political instability in the middle east is playing a critical role is, as far as, the future of Muslims relationship with the west is concerned. The stakes are high, and so are the demands. The current political situation in Syria is just, but  a long tale but the underhand tactics fueling this relentless situation of massacre should not cast the Muslim world into dark shadows. Perhaps there could be some influence from the west, but it should be understood that the humanitarian crisis is dire and urgent measures ought to be always taken without further ado. Politics or pronouncements of terrorism would only serve to worsen the situation.

When Syria’s conflict began two years ago, the international community was agape and did nothing, but until recently when hundreds of lives were claimed in what has been believed to be  chemical weapons attack, the west wanted to act by way of military air strikes. Looking at situations like Syria, Libya and among other Muslim dominated nations, the relationship between the west and Islamic fraternity often suffers a big a blow. All always culminate into a war between Islam and the west. Major bombings the world over are often a blame game and often shifted to our Muslim brothers.

Further, taking a scenario like Egypt, the battle is declared against the Muslim brotherhood. Well, it should be understood that they too have their grievances, and this is just but a situation of normal political disgruntlement among the populace. The senseless and targeted attacks on those who are affiliated to the Muslim brotherhood are definitely uncalled for. Egypt’s case is a tricky one, and the involvement of the west cannot be overruled since the ousting of Mubarak, and Morsi. Many critics of the west argue that their involvement in the East affairs is often interest bound. Weapons stockpile is often at center-stage with the west often coming in to attack the side which they feel isn’t meeting their interest.

Well, we live in challenging times. The world is awash with terror and every part of the world is affected. Cost of living will continue to rise if these blanket criticisms continue to be  targeted at the Muslims for whatever terror related crimes there is in the world but without much basis of claims. The latest terror related attack in Kenya’s upscale shopping mall is one such case which should be treated with care lest the Muslim-western relations get even bitter.

Getting Terrorists To Talk

on Sunday, January 13, 2013

I grew up in the South, where the favored punishment for a disobedient child is a spanking. I know that now, especially in America, “spanking” is a charged term that has even become political, so instead of spanking, I’m going to use the more appropriate term, butt-whopping. If you’ve ever heard stories of kids having to go to a tree to pick their own switch, those stories are true. I can testify. For probably my entire childhood, half the trees in my grandmother’s yard had no low-lying limbs, because she used all of them on me. She wasn’t afraid to grab me by the ear and haul me out of the church service if I was misbehaving. Not that she was abusive. Far from it. I am so incredibly grateful for everything that she did for me. After the butt-whopping was over, she made sure that I knew how much she loves me.
When I was a kid, nothing scared me more than the thought of getting into trouble. It wasn’t just the thought of having disappointed Granny, which was torture to somebody as sensitive as I am. It was the dread of knowing that a butt-whopping was coming as soon as she found out what I did. So, like many children, I constantly lied to try to get out of trouble. I would say that my brother found the axe and cut down the pear tree, or the window was left wide open and a strong gust of wind came in and that’s why the lamp is shattered, or that I was out picking blueberries when firecrackers were tied to the dog’s tail. I would even come in with a bucket full of blueberries to back up my alibi.
Here I want to compare the fear that I felt knowing that a punishment was coming, and how it compelled me to lie, to what the inmates at Guantanamo Bay are probably feeling. A 10-second butt-whopping is nothing compared to being sleep-deprived, water-boarded, and isolated, so how much more would the inmates lie to make the torture stop, if only momentarily?
At the end of the day, what always made me tell the truth to Granny wasn’t the butt-whopping. It was when I crawled into her bed after I was already supposed to be asleep, and her telling me how proud she is of me. Or her saying that if I tell the truth this time, neither me nor my brother would get into trouble. Or when we woke up and made blueberry pancakes together. Even though I could be a demon of a child, I was very sensitive and valued my relationships with other people, especially my family, more than anything else.
As odd as it may sound, the principle of relationship and trust is an incredibly effective way of getting terrorists to talk. When they are hooked up to a polygraph machine and told by the interrogator that if they speak their family will not be harmed but if they do not speak their family cannot be protected, they are much more inclined to talk. And what they say is much more trustworthy.
Army Staff Seargeant Eric Maddox led the team that found Saddam Hussein in 2003. Part of his strategy was protecting family members of those involved in the insurgency when he was able. It paid off when he found the man who took him to Saddam’s hideout in Tikrit.
I’m not trying to say that the interrogator should be emotional or sensitive towards the suspect, or that terrorists should not be held accountable for their actions. What I am trying to say is that there are alternatives to torture. While Granny’s butt-whoppings certainly kept me from misbehaving, it was our relationship that made me tell the truth. Water-boarding a suspected terrorist enough times might (or might not) keep them from assisting in future terrorist plots, but it won’t give the CIA the information that it needs to stop terrorist plots that are already in progress. Treating them with enough human dignity to warrant a measure of trust just might be what is needed to break open terrorist cells and stop terrorist plots.

Juan Cole on the top ten differences between white terrorists and others

on Wednesday, August 15, 2012

1. White terrorists are called "gunmen." What does that even mean? A person with a gun? Wouldn't that be, like, everyone in the US? Other terrorists are called, like, "terrorists."

2. White terrorists are "troubled loners." Other terrorists are always suspected of being part of a global plot, even when they are obviously troubled loners.

3. Doing a study on the danger of white terrorists at the Department of Homeland Security will get you sidelined by angry white Congressmen. Doing studies on other kinds of terrorists is a guaranteed promotion.

4. The family of a white terrorist is interviewed, weeping as they wonder where he went wrong. The families of other terrorists are almost never interviewed.

5. White terrorists are part of a "fringe." Other terrorists are apparently mainstream.

6. White terrorists are random events, like tornadoes. Other terrorists are long-running conspiracies.

7. White terrorists are never called "white." But other terrorists are given ethnic affiliations.

8. Nobody thinks white terrorists are typical of white people. But other terrorists are considered paragons of their societies.

9. White terrorists are alcoholics, addicts or mentally ill. Other terrorists are apparently clean-living and perfectly sane.

10. There is nothing you can do about white terrorists. Gun control won't stop them. No policy you could make, no government program, could possibly have an impact on them. But hundreds of billions of dollars must be spent on police and on the Department of Defense, and on TSA, which must virtually strip search 60 million people a year, to deal with other terrorists.

So Many Terrorists , So Little Time

on Sunday, July 15, 2012

You terrorist.
You camel Jockey.
You this.
You that.

Have you also forgotten that besides having a different faith we share the same race? Ya know, the Human one?

Oh?
You didn’t…     Okay then..

What is Islamophobia?

In my opinion Islamophobia is when people are prejudice against Islam, or actually fear Muslims (hence the phobia). Basically they either hate us or are scared of us because they think we’re going to  kill them.

ohh ohh! Or maybe even a suicide bombing! Yeah, that’s what Muslim do isn’t it?!

Come on guys, get real.

Most people make up this thought in their head that Muslims are like this, without actually taking the time to talk to one, and see what Islam is REALLY about.

The majority of this way of thinking comes from the media. You hardly ever see a “good Muslim” on the news. Mostly all you ever see is people blowing each other up with fists in the air screaming  “Allahu Akbar”, and crazy stuff like that. You all know exactly what I’m talking about.

For some strange reason this is the image that is always showed through our Television screens.

This image is what has people thinking Muslims are other than what we are.

This Image, is what has destroyed comfort that American Muslims used to feel from Freedom of Religion.. It gets us thinking “oh, so I can be treated with respect only if I’m not Muslim?”

It might not be as bad as it used to be.. But I do get horrible looks whenever I go out in public. Even just to my local grocery store..

Guys, this is getting really old and I’m growing sick and tired of people judging me by what they think I am besides who I am.

Islamophobia in America is very present and very obvious. You can see it everywhere.
You see it on tv , online, Everywhere.

And quite frankly it hurts.. And it’s kind of disgusting.

Everyone in the world shares different beliefs and ideas. Yet, Muslims seem to be the main butt of everyone’s hatred.

I just want to live in a world where I can smile at a stranger and receive a smile back. Not a dirty look.

I’m an 18 year old female American Muslim..

I plan to have a husband and children sometime in the near future, and I don’t want my kids being ashamed of who they are because people treat them differently.

Kids have enough to deal with growing up already, with all the things things they get bullied for nowadays.

I don’t want one of the reasons to be because they’re Muslim.

My Islam, is about the Oneness of God and everything good for  our lives.
We live this life style of beauty and honesty, and mercy.

God tells us in the Qur’an that if we aren’t merciful to each other, how do we expect Him to be merciful to us?

So if that’s something we believe, then obviously being evil and murderers isn’t what we’re really about.

Not everyone is like this, obviously we have Muslim Academy , and all of  these wonderful  Non Muslims that are helping get the message out that Islam DOES NOT equal terrorism.
And I am more than happy about what’s going on with this beautiful site and with anyone out there who can just treat each other like human beings and not animals.

I just think if more people came together, we’d have more of an understanding of what Islam’s all about.

Islam is peace…

So wouldn’t it be ironic that  a religion that is about peace would spread corruption and killing?

Yeah, kinda.
