With a number of people calling themselves liberal minded and renouncing religion, with the excuse of being unable to mix modern life and their region, religious leaders worry for the state of the future religion. Islam is not left out in this modern, liberal world. A number of people in the modern world equate religion to rigidity and stagnation.

Islam seeks to go beyond its teachings of prayer and worship, in addition to its set of moral counsels. It seeks to understand man’s relations with God as well as with fellow men. Since Islam also seeks to deal with individual rights and obligations, then it stands out more in the limelight than other religions, with respect of how it copes in its teachings with the ever-changing world.

It has been noted from a number of non-Muslim writers and intellectuals that have studied the Islamic laws, both civil and social, that Islam actually has a body of progressive laws. These progressive laws have led to Islam being attributed as an everlasting and living nation, capable of being manipulated or used in all circumstances and times.

An example of Dr Shibli Shama’il who is an Arabic materialist of Lebanon, regardless of being a materialist, he has expressed his appreciation of Islam as a living religion that can be applicable to all times. He is quoted as saying, ”Those Europeans who attack Islam, either do not know it or criticize it with the bad intention of making the people of the East skeptical about their laws and their system with a view to keeping them under the western tutelage.” This is an extraction from the second volume of his book. “Philosophy of Evolution” that is published in Arabic.

A number of people from the educated class, still question whether or not Islam is compatible with the present modern age. There is a perception that since the world is changing, religion too is bound to change. But if the question of whether or not Islam will evolve with change is answered in the philosophical sense, then it can be observed that it is only the material things of the world that are changing. It goes without saying that, with the modern world, imperfect things in life are replaced with perfect ones.

There are questions of the holy wars, the role of women, and the rise of fundamentalism in the world. Islam may have conflicts with the western world, but in the same breath there are also fundamental tensions within Islam. A number of Muslims feel that the tenants of the Muslim faith have been distorted with actions of its radical elements. Within Islam itself, there is an internal conflict between Muslims who are trying to reconcile tradition with open society and democracy, and those who have reverted to rigid practices and fundamentalist in order to counter the spread of modernism.

A large number of Muslims from all over the world are peace-loving and moderate people who are trying to go about their daily lives while struggling with their values, and trying to reconcile those values to the realities of the modern world. They are no different from any other religious affiliation that is trying to walk the straight path to God.

Islam is a monotheistic religion. If anyone believes in Islam, then he/she is called Muslim. A Muslim believes God is one and incomparable. Muslims call God ‘Allah’. The purpose of existence is to love and serve Allah. They believe by serving Allah, they can go to the Jannat (haven) after death where they will live forever. Muslims additionally believe Islam is the complete universal version of a primordial faith that was revealed before at many times and places, through Abraham, Moses and Jesus, whom Muslims consider prophets. They preserve that this earlier announcements in addition to revelations happen to be somewhat misinterpreted or perhaps transformed with time, although they think Qur’an being the unaltered and the last thought involving The Almighty. They also believe Mohammad is the last prophet, and he is the leader of all prophets. In 1990, 935 million people were Muslims, and now it is 1.57 billion. According BBC, a comprehensive American research deducted in 2009 the amount stood at roughly 23% from the globe population having 60% of Muslims residing in Asian countries. The report was done by the Pew Forum Research Centre. Pew also projected that in 2010 out of the total number of Muslims in the world 62.1% will live in Asia. However, the report also included a statement saying that while the global Muslim population is expected to grow at a faster rate than the non-Muslim population, the Muslim population nevertheless is expected to grow at a slower pace in the next two decades than it did in the previous two decades.

Before 28^th of January 2011, the idea of a Muslim country being ruled by true shariah laws seemed far fetched. Those who called for the implementation of Islamic law, and dreamed of change in the Arab world were considered to be either mad or backward. Salafists were seen as outcasts, and the security apparatus in countries such as Egypt closely monitored their groups. Leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood were imprisoned, and elections in which they participated in were contaminated with fraud to prevent their participation in the legislative process. Other Islamist groups that once took up violence as a path for change (most notably ElJamaa ElIslamiya) were locked away for decades, despite giving up violence as a tool for reform. Mainstream media portrayed these Islamic revivalist movements in a negative light. The method of Western portrayal of Muslims and mainstream Arab media of Islamist groups is almost identical.

The freedoms and liberties that came with the Arab Spring allowed many people to do what they feared to do before, interact with Islamists.

With the newly found freedom, and after decades of building a popular base within the lower social classes, Islamists began to gain much ground in the political arena, winning majority votes in legislative and constitutional structures such as the parliament and constitutional committees. In Egypt, Islamists managed to reach the highest executive position in the nation, the presidency.

With the slow process of reviving the Islamic system of rule in a modern context, many Islamist youth have become impatient with the sluggish pace at the mainstream Islamist groups have been moving. New Islamist groups have emerged, considering mainstream entities such as the Muslim Brotherhood and the mainstream salafist parties to be too accommodating to liberal interests and demands.

It is important to face the fact that Islamic revivalism will not go away no matter what methods are used to eradicate it. Violence begets more violence, as we have seen in places such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. Deprivation of political participation instills resentment toward modern society as the days before the Arab Spring showed. And stereotyping has only lead to a rise of hatred toward the so-called intellectual and political elite.

Recent attempts at toppling current elected Islamist rulers have resulted in the emergence of a new generation of Islamic revivalist groups who aim at protecting the Islamic project.

The rise of Islamic revivalists to power in Arab countries did not begin with the Arab Spring. Algeria, Somalia, and Palestine are examples in which Islamists gained popular support and rose to the highest positions of authority in their respective countries.

The scenarios that occurred in Algeria and Somalia have many similarities, in both cases, the Islamic revivalists arrived to power by popular support (in Algeria’s case, popular elections, in Somalia’s case, public support in eliminating the warlords). The West supported the means with which they were removed from power, and in both cases armed Islamic groups emerged, even more zealous and inclined to violence then those who were toppled. These armed groups were extremely hostile to the West and to Western interests due to previous meddling in their countries’ affairs.

In Palestine, in an effort to ‘pacify’ the resistance movement Hamas, the West encouraged Hamas to take part in the formal political system of Palestine and take part in free and fair elections. And so, in 2006, it participated in the parliamentary elections, winning over 57% of the seats. Emerging from the elections victorious, Hamas extended its hands to Fatah and called for the formation of a unity government. Quite unhappy about the results, the more liberal Fatah refused to comply with Hamas’s invitation, and a new internal struggle began, the climax of which was Hamas’s crack down on Fatah activities and headquarters in the Gaza Strip (after discovering a plot to overthrow the elected government, according the Hamas statements). Numerous air raids and two wars were waged by Israel to bring an end to Hamas’s hold on the recently liberated Gaza Strip; all attempts ending in a failure.

As has been the pattern, the attempts at overthrowing the Islamist ruling system in Gaza have resulted in the emergence of more zealous Islamist groups. Hamas has tried to keep a lid on these groups who have considered Hamas’s system to be lacking in true Islamic principles, or compromising towards Fatah and the occupation.

The Arab Spring has lifted the lid that should be kept removed. It is more beneficial for society that Islamic revivalist groups be free to take part in political and social life, rather than locked away and labeled as outcasts and militants. All attempts at removing them and eliminating them have resulted in negative reactions and, in many cases, violence.

America, it seems, has realized that it is in its interest that the new Islamist rulers not be toppled by force. It has called on the Egyptian opposition to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections. It has also made recent promises of financial support for the ailing economy. And it recently sold more military aircraft and equipment, signaling that not much has changed in regards to its military relationship with Cairo.

It is also in the Zionist regime’s best interest that some level of stability remains in Egypt. An Egypt ruled by the Muslim Brotherhood is safer for its interests than a destabilized nation with alQaeda-style groups at its borders.

However, the rise of Islamists to power in the Arab Spring countries has bothered other countries in the region. The nation that has been most irked by these events is the United Arab Emirates. Traditionally hostile and threatened by Islamist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, it has exploited the presence of Egyptians and of Egyptian interests in its political battle with the new rulers of Egypt. (Word has also spread among pro-Islamists in Egypt that the UAE has supported and funded attempts to topple the current regime.)

With internal conflicts brewing between a liberal-socialist-anarchist alliance and Islamists in Arab Spring countries that have witnessed the rise of Islamists to power, and with the emergence of more zealous Islamist groups, these countries stand on the brink of either civil war, or Islamic revolutions. In either case, it would be impossible to avoid bloodshed, and it is best to avoid both scenarios for the good of the people.

[What led me to this conviction was the fact that it would be unthinkable] for a man of Muhammad’s (pbuh) time to have been the author of such statements on account of the state of knowledge in his days.”

Dr. Maurice Bucaille, an eminent medical scientist and a member of the French Academy of Medicine. He is the author of the book entitled “The Bible, The Qur’an and Science.”

Many people debate about science and religion. How they fit together. Does one discredit the other? Should they be separate from one another? Or does God use science to help us? Does God reveal Himself to us through science? Muslims surely believe this. Science was used in the Qur’an, by a way of verifying everything the prophets said. It gives man the chance to see for himself that which God has created. God encourages man to use a scientific approach in the Qur’an. Here are some examples Muslims were given by God to prove science and religion go hand in hand and should not be separate;

” Men who celebrate the praises of Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (With the thought): “Our Lord! not for naught Hast Thou created (all) this! Glory to Thee! Give us salvation from the penalty of the Fire. “ 

“ Do the unbelievers not realize that the heavens and the earth used to be one solid mass that we exploded into existence? And from water we made all living things? Would they believe?” 

This sounds a lot like the big bang theory does it not? How did Muhammad know about the big bang 1400 years before science?

Islam and science are not different; the in fact they are one and the same. You can not have one without the other. Without science there is no Islam, and without Islam there is no science. This is the way Allah created it. Science goes to prove Islam, and therefore it is not in conflict with the laws of Islam. To prove Muhammad(pbuh) was a true Prophet, God revealed things to him to but into the Qur’an, hundreds of years before science would know about it. There are many examples of this throughout the Qur’an, every thing from: germs, mold, earth science, to the process of birth, and so much more. In fact the entire birth process was revealed by Muhammad(pbuh) 1100 years before science knew about it. People look at the Qur’an as a religious text only, when it is so much more.

“Do they not carefully consider (investigate) the Qur’an or are there locks upon their hearts.” 

Keith L. Moore wrote a college textbook on the subject of embryology: “The Developing Human, Clinically Oriented Embryology” third edition With Islamic additions correlation studies with Qur’an and Hadith through the aid of, Abdul Majeed A. Azzindani. Moore, was a christian, and was so impressed by the accuracy the Qur’an contained on the birth process, from fertilization to birth that he added verses from the Qur’an to his textbook and made it a standard in his class that students must learn this. The fact that Muhammad(pbuh) described this process 1400 years before science knew about it, is mind blowing.

“Do they not consider the Qur’an? Had it been from any other than God, they would surely, have found there in much discrepancy.” 

“It is clear to me that these statements must have come to Muhammad from God, because almost all of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later. This proves to me that Muhammad must have been a messenger of God.” Keith L. Moore, Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto

“Say the Qur’an was sent down by Him who knows the secrets (that is) the heavens and Earth.” 

Dr. Moore was a former President of the Canadian Association of Anatomists, and of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists. He was honored by the Canadian Association of Anatomists with the prestigious J.C.B. Grant Award and in 1994 he received the Honored Member Award of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists “for outstanding contributions to the field of clinical anatomy.”

Oh yeah did I mention he is or at least was a Christian when this book was written.

“O mankind! if ye have a doubt about the Resurrection, (consider) that We created you out of dust, then out of sperm, then out of a leech-like clot, then out of a morsel of flesh, partly formed and partly unformed, in order that We may manifest (Our Power) to you; and We cause whom We will to rest in the wombs for an appointed term, then do We bring you out as babes, then (foster you) that ye may reach your age of full strength; and some of you are called to die, and some are sent back to the feeblest old age, so that they know nothing after having known (much). And (further), thou seest the earth barren and lifeless, but when We pour down rain on it, it is stirred (to life), it swells, and it puts forth every kind of beautiful growth in pairs.” 

If you read the descriptions of birth, it is exactly as it happens. When the birth process starts, the embryo look like a blood clot, then a leech and feeds like a leech. It then goes on to say t it looks like a morsel of flesh what this means is; then the embryo looks like a piece of chewed meat. Actually it looks exactly as such, the best comparison in modern time is: a piece of chewed gum with teeth marks in it.

“But He fashioned him in due proportion, and breathed into him something of His spirit. And He gave you (the faculties of) hearing and sight and feeling (and understanding): little thanks do ye give!” 

Once again knowing the birthing process, you would know that in the beginning the human child in the womb is not proportioned well, until it is time for birth.

“Was he not a drop of sperm emitted (in lowly form)? Then did he become a clinging clot; then did (Allah) make and fashion (him) in due proportion.” 

The verses about the embryo are my favorite, but there are many many more verses, and scientific proofs in the Qur’an. So science is Islam and Islam is science. God created us all, and He created all that we love and do. He created us to be very intelligent, and He knew we would be bored without a means to understand God and his creation. He gave us science to better understand Him and to know more about ourselves and our environment, He did this knowing that we would love this and it would be a way for us to Glorify Him even further. To love Him more and to thank Him for giving us such a beautiful gift, and not only giving us a way to love it but to know it and understand it. As humans we are programed to be curious, and to seek answers to the questions of the universe. Many of us seek understanding everyday, we just want to know. The most commonly asked question is probably, “WHY?”. We always want to know why.

Another great example of the science in the Qur’an. Think of space and galaxies, and dust clouds and how stars and planets are formed. How did a man know 1400 years ago know about the formation of planets stars and galaxies? Think of all the pictures of the universe that Hubble showed us, now take that and compare it to the verses of the Qur’an, here is just one example: This verse is about the creation of the universe,

” Then He (God) turned to the sky, and it had been (as) smoke (dukhaan): He said to it and to the earth: come together, willingly or unwillingly. They said: we do come (together) in willing obedience.” 

What about the universe’s expansion, of course the Qur’an doesn’t mention that? How could a man know about these things that long ago if there is no God to tell him.God tell us in the Qur’an that the universe is indeed expanding in this verse:

“The heaven, We have built it with power. Verily, we are expanding it.” 

Almost every major scientist has acknowledged God at one time or another in their life time. Yet people always use their work to try and disprove the God that loves us so much. They use God’s own knowledge to trick and lie to the people of the world.

What about geology? 1400 years ago God revealed to Muhammad(pbuh) that the crust of the earth moves, and told him about the plates of the crusts of the earth. He told him how mountains are formed and how earthquakes happen. Really, what was the growing theory of earthquakes 1400 years ago? And now we know that mountains grow or shrink at roughly the same pace that our thumb nails grow.

“When you look at mountains, you think that they stand still. Bye they are moving, like the clouds. Such is the manufacture of God, who perfected everything. He is knowing of everything you do.” 

These are just a few examples of how science is used in the Qur’an, and how God reveals Himself to us, using science. There are many websites that offer fair amount of information on science in Islam. I will list a few of those sites for you, so that you may do some research on your own, if you chose to do so.

Ang Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) ay ang pinakabagong anyo ng lengwaheng Arabic, na syang ginagamit sa pagsusulat at pormal na okasyon. Ito ay hanggo sa sinaaunang Arabic, ngunit maraming pagkakaiba sa dalawang anyo. Maraming bagay ang napagbuti sa pamamaraan ng Arabic, lalo na sa larangan ng talasalitaan. Ngunit ang katotohanan din ay nariyan na kung saan ang  dalawang anyo ay may parehong lengwahe, halimbawa ay Arabic, sa gayun marami silang pagkakatulad kaysa pagbabago. Lahat ng pagbabago sa Arabic ay isinangguni ng mga Arab bilang al-lugha al-arabiyya al-fuS-Ha o katulad ng al-fuS-Ha or fus-Ha.

Ang MSA ay ginagamit ngayon sa lahat ng pampamahalaan at opisyal na pagpupulong at liham o pag-uusap, na kung saan ang lengwaheng Arabic ang pangkaraniwang ginagamit sa araw-araw na pamumuhay ng mga Arab. Ang pangkaraniwang lengwaheng ginagamit nila ay kalimitang iba sa MSA at hindi rin katulad sa ibang bansa. Ang pambansang lengwahe ng halos lahat ng bansang Arab ay binubuo ng maraming lokal na wika na maaring higit o may kaunting pagkakaiba sa MSA.

Subalit, sa panahon ngayon ang puwang sa pagitan ng pamantayan sa pagsulat at pagsasalita ng wikain ay tila unti-unting nababawasan sa paglipas ng panahon. Sa ngayon walang mahigpit na paghihiwalay sa pagitan ng pagsulat at pagsasalita ng Arabic, sa totoo lang sa ngayon ang sinaunang anyo ng parehong pamantayan ay ginagamit. Pinagsama ng mga Arab ang pangkaraniwang wika at anyo ng pagsulat na nakasalalay sa katayuan at ang nilalaman ng usapan o liham.

Kalimitan ang ang ordinaryong paraan ng pagsasalita ng Arabic ay hindi ginagamit sa pagsusulat sa halip ginagamit nila ang MSA. Ang pangkaraniwang wikang Arabic ay ginagamit lamang sa pahayagan, sa pakikipanayam, aklat o nobela at sa kanilang programa sa telebesyon. Ngunit ang pangunahing tanong dito ay tungkol sa kung ano ba dapat ang kailangan mong matutunan? Pangkaraniwang Wika o MSA?

Madali lamang ang sagot sa tanong na ito. Tulad ng pagkatuto mo sa ibang mga lengwahe kahit hindi mo matutunan ang ugat ng lengwaheng iyon mararamdaman mong hindi mo kayang unawain ang makabagong lengwahe, maraming pagbabago na ang ginawa sa Ingles, mayroon nang iba’t-ibang uri ng diin o punto at talasalitaang salita ganun din ang pagbigkas ng mga ito ay nagkakaiba-iba sa lahat ng bansa, kaya naman kahit matuto ka ng wikang Ingles ay walang halaga kung hindi mo natutunan ang orihinal na anyo nito. Gayundin, matututo ka lamang ng MSA kung mayroon kang kunting nalalaman sa wikang Arabic. Mahirap matutunan ang wikang Arabic at ito ay magbibigay sayo ng sakit ng ulo sa pakikipag-usap sa bawat Arab na iyong makakasalamuha.

Dahil sa ang MSA ay mahalaga bilang malaking lengwahe at dahil na rin sa kanyang gamit sa medya at edukasyon, halos lahat ng Arab ay alam na at ginagamit na ito. Kapag natutuhan mo na ang MSA ay hindi na mahirap sayo na maunawaan ang mga tao na nasa mundo ng mga Arab o sa rehiyon na gumagamit ng wikang Arabic. Ngunit mayroon pa ring mga iilang Arab ang hindi alam ang MSA dahil nahihirapan silang kausapin ka gamit ang MSA, at sa halip ang kanilang pangkaraniwang wika ang kanilang ginagmit. Iyan ang usapin sa ngayon na kung saan isa sa isangdaan Arab ang walang alam sa MSA.

Sa aking palagay, kailangan mong matutunan ang MSA at ang pangkaraniwang wika o kahit isang wika lang nang sa gayun di ka maharap sa suliranin na may kinalaman sa wikang Arabic.

The meaning of the term jihad means struggle and striving to fight evil. By doing jihad the Muslims can promote the Islamic teachings in their life and can create a Muslim world around them. It is mentioned in the Quran to do jihad of any kind so that they can be a good Muslim. There are two kinds of jihad that are normally discussed by the Islamic scholars one is the internal jihad and the other is the external jihad. The internal jihad is done with oneself to stop oneself from evil doings and the external jihad is with others that are done by stop the evil of others who are doing something against Islam.

Jihad and modern world are not at peace with each other as the modern world hates the concept of jihad. The modern world hates the concept of jihad because they do not understand the concept well. They think jihad is violence but in real jihad is to oppose the evil violence. The Quran explains jihad as a struggle and terrorism is forbidden if we read Quran. There are translations of Quran available in every language as the Quran is in Arabic language. The people can learn Arabic so that they can read and understand the Quran in its original language.

One can learn Arabic language and read the Quran thoroughly and once one knows what is written in the Quran, the ambiguities between jihad and modern world can be made clear. One can learn Muslim culture and one can learn Islam and understand that jihad is a sacred thing that is as far away from the terrorism as possible. The Islamic teachings tell us that the internal jihad is the greatest jihad to fight with one’s own self to make you right and to keep yourself away from evil and wrong deeds. If this is the greatest level of jihad then which sane mind can consider it as terrorism? The Islam asks its followers to wage war inside yourself so that you do not wage war outside with others.

The teachings of Islam even forbid a Muslim country to wage war against a non Muslim country if that country is not disturbing Islam. The modern world thinks that Muslim academies teach its Muslim students to become terrorists. A true Muslim academy creates a true Muslim; if an academy is teaching its students to become terrorists then that the academy is not qualified to be called a Muslim academy because the teachings of such an academy are against the teachings of Islam. The Muslims learn Muslim language so that they can understand the teachings of Islam. The true jihad and modern world need to come at peace with each other as nonviolent coexistence among Muslim and non-Muslim community is possible. The people who are committing the crime of killing the innocent people are either not Muslim or they do not understand the teachings of Islam. Hence Islam needs not to be blamed about the violence.

Arab is the true origin for Islam. With the passage of time, Islam started spreading in other countries and was influenced accordingly. Today Islam has become a mix of a country’s culture and religious beliefs.

There are dozens of Muslims living all over the globe. Although, they belong to different local cultures and countries, however, the core beliefs have always been the same, which are: “No God but Allah and Muhammad PBUH is his prophet”. That makes them united as one Ummah. Islamic teachings include each and every life aspect such as clothing, food, and ceremonies etc. that make up the whole culture.

Understanding Muslim Culture:

Muslim culture comprises of common beliefs and religious practices being adopted by people in different countries, and they revolve around the religion, Islam. Most of the Islamic literature is in Arabic, which was actually developed by Umayyads and was then taken by Arabs to other lands. Persian and Sanskrit have also played some part in this regard.

Festivals and Marriage:

Religious Festivals and marriage in Islam have great importance. Festivals like Eid, Lailat ul qadar and others show the influence of religion on a Muslim’s life. Marriage has been given the status of “half religion” in Islam and is a Sunnah as well.

Art and Architecture:

There has always been a connection of art and Muslim culture. Islamic culture incudes the artistic work with the help of verses of Holy Quran, and inspirations from old architectural mosques and worshipping places. Calligraphic designs have been used in the past in order to create a third dimension of spirituality. Art and Architecture revolves around the principle of Omnipresence. Other than that, an Islamic architecture also includes large courtyards, bright color, domes, minarets, fountains, repetitive art forms, central prayer halls, and a wall niche indicating the direction to Makkah.

Music:

The musical taste in Islamic culture is a bit different and is mostly played in public services. Arab classical and north indian classical are famous forms amongst the different music genres. The credit for introducing this form to musims goes to Sufis.

Muslim Customs and Traditions:

There are a lot of practices today in the modern Islamic world that are not the part of Quran, but still they are part of ours. These practices are actually the essence of Hazrat Muhammad’s sayings, doings, and living that are called Hadees. E.g. growing beard, eating with the right hand, using Miswaak for teeth cleaning, and shaking hand while greeting. However, there are some practices which are neither the part of Quran, nor Hadees, but still do exist in our society due to our local norms and cultures. For instance, Muslims in Pakistan bow down when one’s child reaches 40.

Islam is the 2nd largest religion today, with 2 major sects i.e. Sunni and Shia.. However, 5 pillars that join and unite all Muslims across the world of every sect are Shahdah, Prayer, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj.

Today, we need to think about what to do and what not to. There are so many customs and practices prevailing around that are not supposed to be there according to Quran and Hadees, and need to be wiped off.
