Jihad adalah kata yang paling disalahpahami oleh tidak hanya umat Kristiani, Yahudi, tetapi juga banyak umat Islam. Kesalahpahaman satu kata ini telah menimbulkan kesalahpahaman lain yang tak terhitung pula. Kata tersebut dianggap searti identik dengan “terorisme dan peperangan”, yang benar-benar salah. Propaganda Anti Islam sengaja mengiklankan konsep yang keliru mengenai jihad, hanya untuk membuat panik semua orang terhadap Islam dan memfitnah nama baik Islam.

Dalam Islam jihad sama sekali bukan berarti seperti apa yang terjadi saat ini. Jadi mari kita bersihkan kesalahpahaman ini tidak hanya bagi non-Muslim, tetapi juga bagi jutaan umat Islam lainnya. Jihad secara harfiah berarti mengerahkan upaya terbaik seseorang untuk mencapai tujuan. Dalam konteks Islam itu berarti setiap upaya yang diperjuangkan untuk kemajuan masyarakat demi menggapai keridhaan Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. Oleh karena itu, hal ini menjelaskan bahwa jihad dapat dilakukan oleh siapapun setiap saat. Bahkan, seorang Muslim sejati melakukan jihad sebenarnya sejak kelahiran hingga saat kematiannya karena setiap satu perbuatan baik dianggap sebagai jihad. Dengan demikian, seseorang tidak perlu menjadi superhero untuk melaksanakan jihad, tidak pula termasuk melancarkan perang melawan seluruh dunia.

Menurut Islam jihad memiliki bermacam bentuk. Jihad yang paling penting ialah ‘Jihad bil nafs’ yaitu perjuangan terhadap kehendak dan keinginan jahat seseorang (hawa nafsu). Arti harfiah dari kata Muslim ialah: “Orang yang menyerahkan kehendaknya kepada Allah SWT”. Oleh karena itu, konsep utuh menjadi seorang Muslim berkisar antara menangkal hawa nafsu yang setan tempatkan pada hati seseorang dan melaksanakan apa yang Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala telah perintahkan untuk kita lakukan. Karenanya, jihad meliputi semua perbuatan yang seorang Muslim akan lakukan untuk melawan hawa nafsu hanya untuk mencapai ridha Allah SWT.

Ini merupakan bentuk paling penting dari jihad dan diperintahkan setiap Muslim untuk bertindak atasnya. Seperti Nabi Muhammad SAW sendiri telah bersabda: “Jihad terbesar adalah untuk melawan keinginan orang itu sendiri,” Ini berarti bahwa seorang Muslim yang berjuang melawan hawa nafsunya sendiri adalah yang paling dipandang sebagai upaya seperti memerintahkan takwa di dalam setiap tindak perbuatan hidupnya, dan inilah apa yang Islam minta kepada semua umat Islam untuk melakukannya.

Bentuk lainnya, yang dianggap sebagai Jihad-Al-Akbar yaitu termasuk yang “Besar dari semua bentuk jihad”, adalah upaya seorang Muslim untuk mencari baik pengetahuan duniawi serta keagamaan dan kemudian menyebarkannya. Sebagai Rasul, Nabi Muhammad SAW juga bersabda: “Tinta seorang sarjana adalah lebih suci daripada darah seorang syuhada.” Ini menjelaskan bagaimana sangat berharganya usaha untuk mencari pengetahuan dan menyebarkannya dalam Islam. Namun, tindakan ini hanya dianggap sebagai jihad jika tidak dilakukan demi imbalan moneter atau duniawi. Saya berharap bahwa sekarang telah jelas bahwa jihad tidak sama sekali berarti tindakan terorisme atau peledakan bom. Jihad adalah perbuatan yang dilakukan semata-mata demi menggapai keridhaan Allah SWT.

The word Jihad encompasses a distinct meaning which is often manipulated into something contrary to its original meaning. Jihad is a wide term which means a struggle in the way of God.  Jihad holds a paramount importance in Islam as it teaches its followers to sacrifice the corruption of hearts and minds, and to give up the worldly desires which can distract one from the actual goals of Islam.

Islam means peace, and it stimulates its believers to win over the internal war between evil and good. Jihad means to fight through the evil thoughts engulfed in oneself.  It’s important for every Muslim to conduct an inner Jihad and fight through the evil thoughts; this can make a Muslim more pious and will help him to develop a better understanding of Islam.

The meaning of Jihad has been fabricated by the non-believers. To many, who hold no knowledge of real Islam, Muslims are a violent nation who perform Jihad as terrorism. Jihad means to promote the goodness and justice across the society among all believers irrespective of their religion, race and color. But the non-Muslims often regard the Jihad as a “Holy war” and call it a violent act which is designed to eliminate the non-Muslims if they disagree to the terms and conditions of Islam. Many scholars have time and again regarded Jihad to be a non-violent form of struggle. On the one hand, it encourages a struggle against inner darkness and also lays stress upon physical actions. Some scholars regard Jihad to be a movement which is done to safeguard Islam, it may not be through the use of guns and fire but it can be done via a ceasefire, by the peaceful exchange of thoughts and viewpoints.  The war of words by the use of pen as a sword is the best example of Jihad, which Islam narrates as it is focused to eliminate the pertaining turbulence. Islam never has in its scripture ordered the brutality and injustice in its people. For Islam, humanity is to be looked upon with concern, and equality must prevail across the boundaries of beliefs.

Jihad also means to form a distinctive society that engulfs normalcy, eliminates social evils and promotes equality. Islam has neither armed nor disarmed its followers, if their religion or religious personages are attack they have the right to form an unbreakable shield around themselves as Islam is not a religion made by a man but by the God.

One particular mindset believes that Jihad is synonymous with terrorism, which, in reality, is a contradiction as Jihad is to take personal responsibility and eliminate social evils from one’s own mind as well as from society.

Today many people are familiar with the term ‘Jihad’ but most of them don’t know its exact meaning. “Jihad” is an Arabic word which holds significant importance to the Muslim world. Today this word is very commonly misused. Terrorists such as Al-Qaeda and Taliban have wrongly illustrated the true meaning of ‘Jihad’. They are spreading terrorism around the world within western countries and Muslims countries, under the claim that they are doing jihad for the sake of Allah. In Arabic, the word “Jihad” means striving oneself, but according to the religious context of the Qur’an and the Prophet’s (PBUH) narrations, it expresses the struggle against one’s evil inclinations or the exertion for the sake of Islam and the Muslim community.

Jurists have distinguished four different ways through which a believer can fulfill his Jihad obligations that is by heart, tongue, hand and by sword. Jihad by heart is to defeat evil, perfect inner self and rid heart of all evil thoughts. Jihad by tongue is to tell the truth, be honest, point what is wrong and then correct it, and also to invite non believers to Islam. Jihad by sword is to fight against attackers for defend yourself. So, Jihad is the use of all energies and resources to establish the Islamic system of life. In other words, Jihad before anything else, encourages Muslims to live better and establish what is right and wrong.

During the early years of spreading Islam, Muslims in Makah were tortured by Quraish tribe, insulted and attacked. By the command of Allah they left their properties and migrated to Medina. This was, also, Jihad for the sake of Allah, as Allah ordered Prophet Muhammad to leave all valuable belongings behind and to not to fight any non believer unless he is commanded to do so. In Quran the reason for war is to stop aggression, to protect Islam and to defend religious freedom and human rights.

You can do jihad by several ways like by tongue and by writing. We should preach our religion in an inviting and a friendly manner. If you are Muslim but you are not behaving as one, then you cannot support your religion. Keep in mind that people do not look at what is in heart and mind, instead they judge the actions. Therefore you cannot force any person to accept Islam with sword or weapon, what should be done instead is to understand your religion properly. It is a real fact that Muslims of this era are the biggest hindrance in the spread of Islam since many of them have forgotten the real teachings of their religion. Unfortunately, many current Muslims are Muslims only by name.

JIHAD: MISCONCEPTIONS

It is the favorite practice of countless anti-Islamic forces to quote this verse from the Holy Qur’an in Surah Tauba:”Kill the pagans where ever you find them” [Al-Qur’an 9:5]. The pity is that they never try to find out the context in which this verse was revealed. Actually, the verse was revealed during wartime. Just like in any war, a general orders his army to fight against the enemy. It would definitely be wrong of the army men if they gave up their swords and abandoned the war at that time. Similarly, Allah subhana WA ta’ala also ordained his followers to fully defend themselves and fight those who had waged a war against them.

PROPAGANDA

Ever since the incident of September 11, the West has gone on to raise the propaganda, against Islam, that this act was done under the banner of Jihad by the Muslims. This is completely wrong and many of the non-Muslims know that. To this day nothing can be said with certainty as to who caused that devastation. It is rumored that many people including the Americans also say that it was the American government’s plan for a propaganda against Islam and then to play the September 11 card as a pretext to fight against so called terrorism.

This way America got a pretext to interfere in other countries’ affairs and blast bombs in the name of the fight against terrorism. This can be clearly seen nowadays. However, this does not mean that we are putting the blame on the American government. Instead, the point is that  there is no surety as to who was behind the incident of September 11 and it is still  only a rumor that it was done by Muslims.

Let us consider for the sake of an argument that it was done by Al-Qaeda or any such groups which claim to be Muslims. Islam disregards all such people and expels them from the circle of Muslims. All the learned and educated Muslims of the world do not consider these groups to be Muslims and highly condemn such activities by these groups. Rather, they are considered propagandists of anti-Islamic ideologies and activities.

Another widespread misunderstanding amongst non-Muslims as well as many Muslims is that Jihad means killing non-Muslims. This is totally wrong. Jihad entails any act that is committed for the pleasure of Allah subhana WA tale, such as: helping the poor and the needy by giving charity, helping ones friends, kins and kith either financially or otherwise, seeking and spreading knowledge, going for hajj after enduring all the difficulties in the way of Allah subhana wa ta’ala, defending Islam against those who wage a war against it, and obeying one’s parents and looking after them when they reach old age. Hence, Jihad does not mean killing innocent human beings. Each and every act of good deed is considered Jihad in the sight of Allah subhana wa ta’ala.

In Arabic, Jihad refers to the struggle to attain slated goals by persevering against all difficulties and obstacles that may come up in the process. Indeed, the term Jihad has been used both in the Qur’an and the saying of the prophet to mean the highest exertion in the cause of God. It never implied the attacks against non-Muslims.

It is the duty of every Muslim to strive in the way of God. Look, for instance, at a verse of the Qur’an which exhorts to the way of incessant striving. “And strive in His cause as ye ought to strive, (with sincerity and under discipline). He has chosen you, and has imposed no difficulties on you in religion; it is the religion of your father Abraham. It is He who has named you Muslims, both before and in this(Revelation); that the messenger may be a witness for you, and ye be witness for mankind! So establish regular prayer, give Zakat and hold fast to Allah! He is your Protector – the Best to protect and the Best to Help?” (H.Q. 22:78)

It is especially relevant that in this verse, which explains the nature of Jihad and exhorts the believers to come forward for the same, the statement “that the messenger may be a witness for you, and ye be witness for mankind” has been mentioned explicitly. The Muslims are those who, after Muhammad (pbuh), have been entrusted with the furtherance of the mission of all the earlier prophets. Therefore, Jihad is the struggle and sacrifice that becomes necessary in accomplishing the mission of witnessing to the true religion.

A Muslim must firstly prepare himself for the mission of witnessing to the true religion. An individual carries out Jihad with his own self by subjecting, and controlling, all his likes and dislikes to the dictates of the Divine commandments. Indeed, in accomplishing his mission a Muslim is duty-bound to subject his wealth, family, society and environment to a proper and apt preparedness. All these preparations come within the meaning of the term Jihad.

A Muslim fulfills his mission of bearing witness to the true religion by living his life according to the Divine religion and also by its propagation. It is also the duty of each Muslim to become part of the process of working for change in a situation wherein the freedom for carrying out both these objectives is curtailed. It is also his obligation to be an active member even of an armed campaign for the restoration of the freedom of religious practice in the event that such a situation comes up and, wherein, the Muslim society does decide that such a course of action is, indeed, imperative.

Jihad is never the battle waged against non-Muslims in a simplistic and general sense. It is, in fact, the nature of life that is lived in accordance with Islam and the exertions, sacrifices and struggle that will be necessary to throw aside the forces that disallow one to live as a Muslim. Only in such circumstances, therefore, will Jihad be in the form of an armed campaign. In all other situations it will remain only as the life that is lived according to Islam and as the struggle that goes with the propagation thereof.”

Konsep Jihad tidak hanya ada dalam agama Islam tapi juga dalam Yahudi, Kristen, serta ideologi ekonomi maupun politik. Jihad yang dimaksudkan dalam Islam berarti perjuangan demi perbaikan, jihad juga berarti berjuang demi membela kehormatan, harta, maupun tanah air. Jihad bisa dilakukan dengan ucapan bahkan dengan hati jika dia tidak dalam kondisi yang memungkinkan untuk melakukan jihad dengan tindakan. Semua itu sudah bisa dianggap sebagai jihad.

Orang-orang yang meragukan makna jihad dan terorisme bisa mempelajari bahasa Arab dan memahami Quran yang juga berbahasa Arab. Ajaran Quran secara jelas menyebutkan bahwa islam adalah agama yang damai dan membenci peperangan. Agama Islam melarang umat Muslim dari berperang dengan saudara sesama Muslim, negara Islam lain, bahkan juga negara non-Muslim jika mereka tidak melakukan sesuatu yang menentang Islam. Islam bahkan mengutuk orang yang memaksa orang lain masuk Islam, dan itu dianggap sebagai suatu kejahatan.

Orang yang menganggap bahwa jihad dan terorisme memiliki makna yang sama memiliki pemahaman yang rancu dalam pikiran mereka karea Islam sangat menolak terorisme dengan segala bentuknya. Jihad bisa dilakukan untuk melawan terorisme, tapi tidak untuk membantunya. Islam tidak membenarkan segala bentuk kekerasan, tidak peduli dilakukan oleh pemerintah maupun individu. Islam mengecam pembunuhan orang yang tidak bersalah di semua tingkatan. Membunuh orang yang tidak bersalah bertentangan dengan ajaran Islam; Islam menganggap bahwa membunuh satu saja orang yang tidak bersalah sama halnya dengan membunuh seluruh umat manusia.

Arti Islam sendiri adalah damai dan karenanya Islam mengajarkan cinta dan damai di mana saja. Arti jihad dalam Islam adalah berjuang, sedangkan arti dari terorisme dalam kamus adalah kekerasan dan atau pengendalian yang dicapai dengan kekerasan atau menanamkan ketakutan dan ancaman. Sekarang apa anda bisa menganggap bahwa jihad dan terorisme memiliki makna yang sama? Saya kira tidak.

Agama Islam mengingatkan umatnya lagi dan lagi jika mereka menikmati kekerasan dan terorisme, mereka akan menanggung kerugian berupa kehilangan cinta Allah dan kasihNya. Islam sangat melarang umat Muslim dari menjadi teroris; Islam menjunjung nilai moral yang tinggi dan menanamkan nilai cinta, keadilan, kesetaraan, dan perdamaian.

The people who are committing the crime of killing the innocent people are either not Muslim or they do not understand the teachings of Islam. Hence Islam needs not to be blamed about the violence.

The concept of jihad is not only included in the religion of Islam but also in the religions of Judaism, Christianity and other economic and political ideologies too. Jihad as defined by Islam means struggle for improvement and it also means fighting in order to defend the honor or an asset or homeland. People who consider jihad and terrorism as having the same meaning have a very absurd notion in their minds as Islam completely rejects terrorism in all its forms. Jihad can be done against terrorism but not to help promote terrorism. Islam does not justify any type of violence regardless of the fact if it is committed by a government or an individual. Islam is criticized the killings of innocent people at all levels. It is against the teachings of Islam to kill innocent people; Islam has declared a murder as a murder of the whole humanity.

The meaning of Islam itself is peace and hence it promotes love and peace everywhere. The meaning of jihad in Islam is struggling and the meaning of terrorism in dictionaries is violence and or any control that is attained by force or by inculcating fear or by giving threats. Now can you consider jihad and terrorism as having same meaning, I guess not.

The religion of Islam reminds its believers again and again that if they would indulge in terrorism and violence they would have to bear the loss of the love of Allah and His blessings. Islam strongly forbids Muslims from becoming terrorists; Islam promotes high moral values and inculcates the values of love, justice, equality and peace.
