What Islam says about Husband and Wife Relationship

on Sunday, April 7, 2013

Islam is not merely a religion that asks to you worship and get closer to God. The religion guides humankind in each aspect of life. It is a way of life that is not limited to your relation with God, but also tells you how you should go about with other people, be it your parents, or your siblings, or friends or even your spouse.

Before the advent of Islam, ignorance and wilderness were spread everywhere. Women had no rights neither as sisters, nor as daughters and not even as wives. The religion of Islam came and elevated the position of women. Where it laid down a few rules and principles, it also laid down the basic rules of forming a good mutual understanding between husband and wife. As previously believed that women were much lower in status than men were, Islam raised women and said that both were equal. It gave rights and responsibilities to both husbands and wives. Where there were rights of husbands on wives, Islam also outlined the rights of wives on husbands. If each of them fulfills the rights of others and performs his duties, an amazing husband wife relation is formed that cannot be broken by anybody.

Islam asked wives to obey their husbands. They were asked to protect their husbands’ properties in their absence. A wife is also given the duty to bring up her husband’s children and protect his house. She is not allowed to allow anybody to enter his house without his permission. Islam also taught women that the respect and honor of their husband is actually their respect and honor. Islam also taught women to be thankful to their husbands for whatever they give them. They should be a source of comfort for their husbands. The Holy Quran says:

“Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient and guard in (the husband’s) absence what Allah would have them guard.”

(4:34)

On the other side of the coin, where Islam tells a woman how she should be with her husband, it also tells husbands how they should treat their wives. Husbands are ordered to be kind towards their women. The Holy Prophets (Peace be upon Him) is reported to have said: “The best among you is he who is most kind to his wife. “

Similarly, the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon Him) gave a lot of importance to the rights of women and the treatment of wives in his last sermon. He said that wives have rights over husbands and husbands have rights over wives. Husbands should treat their wives with kindness.

Among the rights of wives over husbands outlined by Islam, we see that a man should feed his wife what he eats and make her wear what he wears himself and should not mistreat her.

Similarly, it tells a woman to be obedient towards her husband. She should guard the reputation of her husband in his absence and cause him comfort. It is also narrated by Holy Prophet (Peace be upon Him): “A wife who dies while her husband is pleased with her will enter Paradise.”

Thus, the husband wife bond is a very precious bond. God has made the system of marriage such that both wives and husbands become a source of comfort and support for each other. They should live in peace and cooperation.

Responsibilities of a Husband

on Saturday, March 16, 2013

Islam sets the course of a married life for both husband and wife. In Quran many ayaat, as well as many hadith, prescribe equity, kindness, consideration, love, sympathy, goodwill and patience. A husband is responsible for the leadership of his family. A man must be held responsible to the duties according to his capacity. Man as a husband is held responsible for basic duties like generosity, sincerity, respect, love, care, compassion, protection, privacy, keep promise, and keep patience towards his family.

A Hadith narrated by Aisha the prophet’s wife:

Allah’s Messenger (saws) said, “The best of you is he who is best to his family, and I am the best among you to my family.”

In our society man has the authority in certain matters, only because he is the head of the family. Authority without responsibility leads to ghastly and unpleasant ends. So he must have at least some basic leadership qualities; e.g.: decision making, direction taking, risk taking, planning and sense of timing. A husband is responsible to protect her wife’s honor and should not to place her in situations where it is compromised or belittled. Man should not only provide his wife with necessities and facilities but also be well mannered and good to her. Men are directed not to treat their wives harshly.

Allah says:

“Someone who is well off should spend from his fortune, and whoever is poor should spend from what Allah gives him.”

A Hadith narrated by AbuBakr as-Siddiq:

The Prophet (saws) said, “One who treats badly those under his authority will not enter Paradise.”

The husband should not keep his wife in a state of suspense or to stay away from his wife. He must attempt with sincerity to gain her trust, and always seek her welfare. Protracted separation around 6 months or more without prior arrangement no matter the reason is sufficient for a wife to obtain a divorce from the court.

It is hereby clarified that no one is superior or inferior in a relationship; it is the distribution of qualities and responsibilities. In some aspects, men are better and in others women leads e.g. according to a psychological research men are better at orienting objects and speaks logic; women are better at communicating and emotionS. Both gIve different reactions to stress, and they process information at different rates in different situations. Allah clearly states: -

“The nobler among you in the sight of God is the more righteous among you.” (49:13)

In order to maintain prosperity and peace in a married life, both should take care of each other. They should have to respect each other’s emotions, sentiments and must never disclose the secrets of the household. They should be patient, kind hearted, caring and forgiving. Both halves should be co-operative and supportive to each other and can convince the other if he/she do mistakes.

Rights of Husband on Wife

on Saturday, March 9, 2013

Islam is the religion that not only guides man towards worship but also guides man how he should be towards others. The religion of Islam came as a blessing for men, women and children as it informed every individual of his rights and duties, so that if each of them fulfills them receives his due rights, and then a happy & peaceful society is formed.

Islam also informed the people about some aspects of marriage. It gave a completely different meaning to marriage, as compared to the practice of people in the days of ignorance. It limited the number of women that a man could marry and gave strict orders on equal treatment of each of them. Rights of wives on husbands and rights of husbands on wives were set, so that if each spouse fulfills the due rights of the other, then no bond can be as good as that between a husband and wife, and there would be no need for divorce. Where Islam has laid special rules and special instructions about the treatment of women, it has also set a few rules and informed women of their duties towards their husbands. The husband is the head of the house, and he demands respect that accompanies that role. He earns money and comes home tired. He is of the utmost importance for the house and the family, so Islam set the rights of husbands on wives.

Husband can demand from his wife to give him respect and protect his house, his belongings, property, and children in his absence. The wives must obey their husbands. If a husband does not permit his wife to do something, the wife should refrain from such a thing, because it makes her husband unhappy. Similarly, if a husband asks his wife to do something she should do it. Obeying his orders is essential, and in fact compulsory, as far as he does not give any orders against the rules set by God.

While the man is away, the wife should protect his house. She should not allow anybody in her husband’s house without his permission, give good care to his children and get all her work done before her husband comes home. She should spend time with her husband, and support him in good or bad.  It is advised she is friendly with his parents and his family, and give them respect, so if the husband asks his wife to serve his parents, she should do that happily, as this is a part of obedience of husband.

Thus, if a woman fulfills all the obligations put on her by  Islam, she is surely going to get good returns from her husband. If she shall be good, the spouse would also be good towards her, thus, a good everlasting bond would be formed.
