Othman ben Affan

Othman Ebn Affan (16)

on Tuesday, October 9, 2012

I would like to start this article with a notice I received from one of the respected readers, as he told me that I write than name of our hero in a wrong way. He said that the name is Utham not Othman. Well, I told him does it matter if I started the name with O instead of U? I think the answer is no, all I need is to pronounce the name right and to read the story and benefit from the life story of the great Othman Ebn Affan.

As I said in the last article, Othman Ebn Affan added a lot of values to the Muslim world in his era and his achievements were really great to a community that needed a true leader like Othman. He managed to expand the Muslim empire, protected the Muslim community from conspiracies of Fors and Romans, which helped Muslims to have a period of peace and safety that made them able to build a strong world.

Another important achievement, Othman Ebn Affan expanded Al Masjid Al Haram and Al Masjid Al Nabawi in order to allow more Muslims to perform Hajj and Umrah without being crowded in a small area. He also gathered the Holy Quran for the second time in one book and copied the Mushaf (Holy Quran Book) that was in the custody of Al Sayeda Hafsa, seven times. Othman copied the Mushaf seven times and spread it in different places (Al Kufa, Al Basra, Al Sham, Egypt, Yemen, Mekkah and Al Madina) so that Muslims can learn the teachings of Islam. He also ordered to burn any other copies of the Quran, because there was mistaken copied of the Quran.

The Islamic economic sector witnessed an expansion in Othman’s time. He dedicated monthly aids to Muslim families and he provided each Muslim a Derham in Rmadan in order to buy breakfast, while he gave mothers two Derhams to buy food for the children and themselves. Othman Ebn Affan also ordered to make a table near Al Masjid Al Nabawi for those who can not buy food, as he wanted to be sure than non of Muslims are hungry.

There is something that we all should focus on, Othman Ebn Affan focused on two sides; they are the economic side and the military side. The economic side was very important for the Muslim nation in that time as it was economically unstable and he wanted to provide more stability to the Muslim people, while the military side was very important because the Muslim community was threatened by many powers, after the death of Omar Ebn Al Khattab, so it was important to eliminate such threats before it hurt the Muslim community.

Some people say that Othman Ebn Affan did not pay enough attention to spreading Sheikhs in the newly opened countries to teach new Muslims all the teachings of Islam that is mentioned in the Holy Quran and Sunnah. I think that this is not true, especially that Othman was the first to spread original copies of the Mushaf in different regions in order to be a reference for Muslims in any problem.

Othman Ebn Affan (14)

on Sunday, September 30, 2012

When Othman Ebn Affan became the Caliph and he accepted this great responsibility, he sent three massages to three important parties. The first massage was to the Muslim nation. He said “our lives are short. Do good deeds as much as you can, because the world we live in always makes a man forget his duties. Keep the experience of old nations before your eyes and see how they forgot the teachings of Allah, so they ended in a bad way. Allah ordered us to work and ordered us not to forget the judgment day, so always be prepared.” This was Othman’s first massage to the nation and when the people heard him saying it, they cried.

The second massage from Othman Ebn Affan was to the leaders of the army. He said “you are the defenders of Muslims, and Omar En Al Khattab has prepared you very well. I don’t want any change in your situations or you will be changed, and always remember that Allah is watching you in all what you are doing”.

As for the third massage, it was from Othman Ebn Affan to Muslims living in far countries. He said” I call for the workers every season and I ordered them to implement what is allowed and avoid what is forbidden. I fulfill any request I receive from my workers and me or my family have no rights like the people I rule”.

These were the most important three massages Othman Ebn Affan sent when he became in charge for the Muslim world. The first massage is for the Muslim nation and he emphasized on the importance of work. He ordered the nation not to forget the teachings of Allah and never to forget that Allah will reward us for our good deeds in the judgment day.  The second massage was for the army, because he knew the important rule of the army to protect a nation that is targeted by a lot of enemies. He reminded the leaders of the army of what Omar Ebn Al Khattab did to them, because he knew that Omar managed to create a very strong Muslim army in his era.

The third massage is for Muslims living away from the center of ruling and to those workers who are very important for building a strong community. It is very important for a new leader, who just accepted the responsibility of a great nation like the Islamic nation, to send direct massages to the most important sections in his community. He managed to deliver clear meanings and establish very clear guidelines for his ear with these massages and later we will talk about Othman Eb Affan’s achievements with he was a Caliph.

Othman Ebn Affan (10)

on Friday, September 14, 2012

Othman Ebn Affan played a great role in building the Islamic community when Omar Ebn Al Khattab was the Caliph. Othman was one of Omar’s main consultants, as he joined him with Aly Ebn Abi Taleb all the time, in different events and in all the achievements Omar realized.

When Omar Ebn Al Khttab was dying in the twenty third year of Al Hijra, Omar refused to chose a man who will be a Caliph, after his death. When the people asked Omar to chose a Caliph so that the people won’t fight for power, he said “I would chose Abu Obaid Ebn Al Garrah because the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him said he is the honest man of the nation, but he is dead. I would also have chosen Salem Mola Abu Hozaifa because the Prophet said he loves Allah a lot, but both men are dead, so I will chose six men to chose who will be the Caliph and the men are; Othman Ebn Affan, Aly Ebn Abi Taleb, Abdulrahman Ebn Auf, Talha Ebn Obid Allah, Al Zubair Ebn Alawam and Saad Ebn Abi Wakkas”.

Omar continued “Abdullah Ebn Omar will help to the committee of six men to choose the Caliph, and I think they will choose Aly Ebn Abi Taleb or Othman Ebn Affan. I will not carry the responsibility of this choice when I’m still alive or when I’m dead.” Omar Ebn Al Khattab was afraid to choose a man who may not be perfect for this place, but he was sure that any man of the six men he names will be good for the important position, especially that he knew these men very well, since he worked and lived with them in the days since the days of the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him.

This makes us think carefully before choosing an assistant or a vice. In our days, the President or the governor usually chooses someone who will be serving their interests, but when we think deeply, we will find that Omar Ebn Al Khattab choose who will be the best for the whole nation. He did not choose a man who will honor his achievements after he dies, or a man who will always mention his name in every achievement the community realize. He chose honest men, who loved Allah and learned his teachings from the Holy Quran and the Sunnah, in order to serve the nation exactly like Omar Ebn Al Khattab did.

In the coming article we will discuss how the committee of six men gathered and choose the new Caliph (Othman Ebn Affan) to follow the steps of the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him, Abu Bakr Al Sedik and Omar Ebn Al Khattab.

Othman Ebn Affan (5)

on Friday, August 10, 2012

Othman Ebn Affan became a valued man. Especially after Al Hijra because of his good behaviors and his good manners, in addition to his situations that clearly illustrate his love to Islam and Muslims. His value and position among Muslims continued to grow day by day, especially that the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him trusted him very much and considered him a main pillar for the Muslim society.

One day Muslims planned to go for Umrah in Makkah and the men gathered for this purpose. When Muslims arrived to the boarders of Makkah, its people refused to let Muslims enter the city to perform Umrah. The Prophet told Omar Ebn Al Khattab “go to the leaders of Makkah and tell them that Muslims came for Umrah and not for a war”, but Omar Ebn Al Khattab replied “O Prophet, you know I would do anything you say, but you know how much the people of Makkah hate me, so if I entered Makkah, they will kill me instantly and I won’t be able to deliver your massage. I suggest that you send Othman Ebn Affan.”

The Prophet peace be upon him agreed with Omar Ebn Al Khattab and he asked Othman Ebn Affan to go to the leaders of Makkah, especially Abi Sofian who hated Islam and Muslims very much.

Othman Ebn Affan agreed to go and he went to the leaders of Makkah and told them that Muslims came to perform Umrah, and they didn’t come for a war. Othman was staring at the Kaaba while he was walking inside Makkah, so Abu Sofian told him “O Othman, you are a man with a high rank in our tribe, so if you want to do “Tawaf” around the Kaaba (walk a round the Kaaba), you can do it. In this situation Othman Ebn Affan replied “I will never do this, unless the Prophet do it first”.

In this time the Sahaba thought that Othman Ebn Affan performed Umrah without the rest of Muslims, but the Prophet said “I know very well that Othman will not do Tawaf or Umrah, unless I do it, even if he stayed in Makkah for years”. The Prophet trusted Othman very much and knew very well, that he is a man with deep faith and a man who stick to his word.

Kurysh tribe put Othman Ebn Affan in jail to think about the proper action to be taken towards Muslims, but a rumor was sent to Muslims saying that Othman was killed. The Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him became very angry and he told the rest of Muslims “let’s revenge for Othman Ebn Affan” and Muslims supported the Prophet which was called (Al Bayaah) and Muslims prepared for a war, but the truth appeared and Muslims knew that Othman wasn’t killed and he is in jail.

In this situation, a verse in the holy Quran was delivered to the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him with a meaning “Allah is supporting those who backed you in that day”, which means Muslims did the right thing in this situation. By the end of this problem, Muslims and Kurysh leaders decided to make a pact which was called Sulh Al Hudaybeya (an agreement for peace between the two parties) and Othman was back to his family, after spending days in Makkah refusing to perform Umrah without the Prophet Mohammed being beside him.

Othman Ebn Affan (3)

on Wednesday, August 1, 2012

As I mentioned before, Othman Ebn Affan converted to Islam in its early stages, as he went to the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him and the Prophet said “O Othman, Allah invites you to his Jannah (Heaven) and you need to respond, as I find you a wise man”, so Othman suddenly said the testimony and entered Islam. After this situation it was normal to see a lot of people in Kurysh and in Othman’s family, starting to fight him and work hard to force him leave Islam.

Othman Ebn Affan’s uncle Al Hassan Ebn Abi Alas tied him with chains and started to torture him saying “I will never let you go and I will keep torturing you until you leave this new religion (Islam) and go back to the religion of your parents”. In this difficult situation Othman said to his uncle “I sware to Allah, I will never leave Islam and I will stick to its teachings, even if you kept me tied all my life”.

Maybe it is easy for us to imagine this situation, but it is really hard to feel how hard the situation was for a man like Othman Ebn Affan who newly converted to Islam and his family started torturing him. It was easy for him to accept what they say and get back to the religion of his parents, but his faith became very deep from the first day of his Islamic life and he did not think for a second to leave Islam, after he found peace and found the right way.

The people of Makkah continued to pressure Othman Ebn Affan to leave Islam. As I mentioned before, he was a trader and his trades were very famous in the Arab peninsula, so non Muslim traders started to pressure him through this field. The traders started to ignore the goods that he sells and order the people not to buy from him to increase his losses, but Othman continued to have his patience and kept his support to the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him.

When the people of Makkah and Kurysh continued to torture Muslims and pressure them to leave Islam, the Prophet ordered Muslims to do Al Hijra (travel from Makkah to Al Madina), so Othman Ebn Affan was the first man to do Hijra and he took his family with him. The Prophet Mohammed said “Othman Ebn Affan is the first man to do Hijra with his family, after the Prophet Lut peace be upon him”, and this gave Othman a great spot among the Sahaba.

It is really great for a man to be mentioned with Prophets. The Porphet Lut came hundreds of years before Othman was born, and Othman with his great faith, was mentioned in history to be doing the same as the Prophet Lut did. May Allah bless Othman’s soul and guide us to the right way.

Othman Ebn Affan (2)

on Monday, July 30, 2012

In the last article I mentioned some general information about Othman Ebn Affan, and now I would like to mention more details about his life that enriched the Muslim culture. One of the main things we should know is how this great man converted to Islam. It is a very simple and great story, as one day Othman Ebn Affan saw dream that someone is saying “O sleepy people wake up, this is Mohammed came out in Makkah”. Othman had an aunt that he loved so much so he went to her to explain the meaning of his dream, so she told him “Mohammed is the Messenger of Allah and he came to guide you to the right way”.

Othman went to Abu Bakr El Sedik and told him what his aunt said, so Abu Bakr said “your aunt said the truth, O Othman I can see you are a very polite man and this manner should guide you to Islam”. Abu Bakr also told Othman to go to the Prophet Mohammed and listen to him.

Othman did what Abu Bakr told him and he went to the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him. The Prophet saluted Othman Ebn Affan, and then Othman suddenly said Al Shehada (The testimony that there is only one god who is Allah and Mohammed is his Prophet). It is important to know that Othman Ebn Affan was the eighth man to enter Islam, which is giving him a unique place in the history of Muslims.

Othman Ebn Affan is one of the men who were told by the Prophet Mohammed that they will be in Al Janna (heaven), which is a great level for a man to reach. Imagine a man that was told by the Messenger of Allah that he will be in heaven, while he is still alive.

Abu Mousa Al Ashaary (one of the great companions of the Prophet Mohammed) said ” I went to the see the Prophet Mohammed in his house, but I couldn’t find him and when I asked his wife, she told me that he is at Ares well. I went to the Prophet and he was performing Woduaa then he set by the well, so I decided to guard the Prophet. Abu Bakr Al Sedik came and he wanted to go to the Prophet, but I stopped him to ask for the Prophet’s permission first. The Prophet told me to tell Abu Bakr to come and tell him that he will be in Al Janna”.

Abou Mousa continued “Omar Ebn Al Khattab came after Abu Bakr and he wanted to join the Prophet and his companion but I stopped him to ask for the Prophet’s permission, so the Prophet told me to let him come and tell him that he will be in Al Janna. The same thing happened when Othman Ebn Affan and the Prophet told Abu Mousa to tell Othman that he will be in Al Janna for a bad thing will happen to him, and then Othman said that he will be patient”

Othman knew that he is on the right way, and he is valued by the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him, so Allah loved him. It was normal to see a loyal man like Othman Ebn Affan, occupying a place among the great ten men who were told that they will be in heaven, while they are still alive.

In the coming article we will be discussing Othman Ebn Affan’s contributions in the Islamic culture and in building the Muslim world. All his work was for the sake of Muslims and for building a great civilization that should last thousands of years.
