Islamic Manners

on

Islam always emphasizes on building a dignified and strong character. It preaches respect and a pleasant behavior towards others in the most detailed manner with examples of the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions to guide us. Good manners in Islam symbolize and assure a dignified character.

In most societies, people might associate sophistication with wearing expensive clothes and jewelry, living a lavish life style or traveling first class, but sophistication in Islam has nothing to do with money or the worldly possessions, it is just about the manners you carry in your character.

There is a long list of Islamic manners that signify good character and personality of a Muslim. Even if someone is a non-Muslim knowing these manners would be helpful for him if he travels to a Muslim country or sits in the company of Muslims.

The list of Islamic manners is so long and comprehensive that it could not be covered in details in one article, but I will highlight some of them:

The Islamic manners of greeting: Muslims always greet each other by saying “Assalam o alaikum” meaning “peace be upon you” and the reply to this is “Walaikum Assalam” and when asked “how are you” the reply is always “Alhamdulillah” meaning “praise be to Allah”. Greeting is made with a hand shake or an embrace if one is coming from a journey, and you put your hand on your heart after shaking it. As for who should greet first there is a Hadith narrated by Abu Huraira,

Allah’s Apostle said, “The younger person should greet the older one, the walking person should greet the sitting one.” Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 8, Book 74, No. 252e.

The Islamic manners of eating and drinking: Muslims always eat with their right hand and do not stand or walk while eating and drinking. Before eating or drinking “Bismillah” has to be recited and afterwards “Alhamdulillah” is said. We should not drink one glass in one gulp, rather in three sips and should eat using three fingers. Golden or silver cutlery should not be used as it is against modesty. One should not talk too much during meals and should let the elders begin their meal first, and no food should be wasted.

The Islamic manners of talking and listening: One should talk in a gentle tone especially with one’s mother and should not initiate or take part in foul discussion. Back biting or making tales about others is a big sin in Islam and it’s an act way below character. One should remain quiet when the call of Azan begins even if he is in the middle of a sentence he should become silent till Azan ends. One should not interrupt while the other is speaking, even if he has heard the story before he should listen intently till the end as good manners.

Some other important manners include; not listening to music or singing songs, saying “Sallal Laho Alaihe Wasalam” whenever the beloved Prophet’s (PBUH) name is said and greatly respecting elders, scholars and teachers. A teacher has the same respect as one’s father in Islam and should be obeyed and revered like a father.

America needs to review its policies

on

Whatever is happening in Syria and Egypt, it has a lot to do with the standing of the United States of America. The major focus of the drama is switched from Egypt to Syria. The initiation of the civil war in Syria is still unclear, but this makes it obvious that the Obama administration is moving with the strategy of destroying Muslim states.

The Obama administration is no longer different from Bush administration as they both are aggressive against the Muslim states. It was said that Obama has a soft corner for Muslim’s community, but with the passage of time, the strategies of Obama administration showed that Obama is ready to pay the heavy price just to destabilize Muslim territories. The war against Iraq and Afghanistan is a proof to be a mistake.

It’s not only America that suffered the loss of the lives of their military men, but coalition partners also suffered a lot as the number of suicides have increased in the armed forces of America in the recent years. One of the reports said:

“There is a higher number of percentages involved in the suicide by the troops, the problem not only ends here as there are larger numbers of cases found including sexual assaults, alcohol abuse, domestic violence and other problems. The rate of suicides is the highest in the last ten years that is almost one suicide per day.”

The number of combat deaths is lower than the suicides as the troops are facing larger mental health problems. Most of the troops are not willing to take part in the war as they are forced to take part in the killings. Efforts were made by the US military to rehabilitate the mental sickness problems, but failed to do so as most of the military men believed that by having the treatment they may lose the chance of getting promoted.

One of the astonishing facts is that the rate of suicide in the US military is even higher than that of civilian suicide. The financial loss faced by America is way too high averaging $75,000 for every American household. According to the report by Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, there would be budgetary crises to be faced by the government in coming years.

Today’s Islam is not Mohammad’s (PBUH) Islam

on

Islam is the religion of peace, love, unity, equity, equality, patience, brotherhood, understanding, knowledge, helping each other and coexistence. The basic teachings of Islam have the guarantee from Allah that it will remain till the dooms day and will never change. The basic principles of Islam are based on the nature and scientific realities, and there is no conflict between Quran and modern science, but in fact, Quran has helped the humankind a lot in understanding the universe and the creatures within it.

Islam promotes peace and harmony, but one will ask then why Islam is famous for its terrorist groups Al-Qaeda, Taliban and so on! Why the majority of Muslim world is living under the poverty line and so much ignorance! Why Muslims are not trusted all over the world! Why the Muslims kill each other in the name of religion! Why Muslims are so barbaric today! Why they are killing innocent people including children, women and old people!

All these questions have to be answered in light of the history. We know Islam is the religion of love, and this was a practice in the early Islamic society. Muslims loved each other, their neighbors and even helped those who were non-Muslims, but this is not the case today; What we observe today is a shame for Muslims. The Islamic society is full of all sins and misdeeds. Many obvious and open commands of Allah are not being followed by the Islamic society. We have thousands of banks, while interest is against Allah and His Prophet (PBUH). Some people drink alcohol which is forbidden, others openly talk about girlfriends and boyfriends. In fact, we have adopted all the bad habits of the west and none of their good habits like punctuality, truthfulness, trustworthiness and commitment to their work.

The early Islam of Muhammad (PBUH) stressed on the need to build a society with the basis on truth and trustworthiness. Our beloved Prophet (PBUH) himself was an example of the finest character. His enemies used to dislike his thoughts and teachings, but never pointed towards His (PBUH) character. He was famous as Sadiq (Truthful) and Ameen(Trustworthy) even before Islam. We pray, worship Allah, preach Islam, but we don’t follow Islam. Islam covers all aspects of Life, but we can hear many so-called scholars of Islam saying that Islam has nothing to do with politics, science, modern world and so on. We blame our failure as a society over Islam. Maybe either we don’t understand Islam, or we know everything but are reluctant to follow and enforce Islam in our lives.

We are doing whatever we want and we are insisting that we are on the straight path. When a suicide bomber blows himself and two dozen innocents, he thinks that he will go to heaven, but the wars of early Islam under the leadership of Muhammad (PBUH) were the best examples of wars. The Muslims were instructed strictly not to follow who flee, not to hit on the injured, old people, women and arm-less, not to spoil animals, houses and crops of the enemy. There was no question of blowing up those innocent people who are different from you in their thoughts, belief and character. Indeed, we can say that Today’s Islam is not Muhammad’s (PBUH) Islam. We need to go through a major surgery in our beliefs, in our society and the way we lead our lives.

My Experience with Muslims

on

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world; perhaps due to the fact that it appears to be the most accommodating faith in developing countries where most of the world’s inhabitants are found. Conversely, it is not as stigmatized as Christianity that has the dubious reputation of being associated if not unfairly, with colonialism. As a Christian, I look at all faiths as equal because in school, we were taught to respect other faiths by virtue of the fact that God will favor you as long as you are an ardent follower of your faith.

I grew up in a society that comprised diverse faiths, races and ethnic groups. I could be termed a ‘moderate’ because I relate to anybody that I share things in common with. My respect for other faiths helps me to gain a valuable insight into their beliefs, and I sometimes think that if I wasn’t a Christian, I would most probably be a Muslim. This is because The Bible and Quran share striking similarities in material, and the divergent views may not be too far fetched as some may think. Secondly, a major similarity in Christianity, Islam and Jewish religions that cannot be changed is the use of the Old Testament as referred to in the Bible. It is a pointer to the common origin of man.

Based on such perceptions, there is not much of a difference between Christianity and Islam, save for the New Testament where Jesus Christ is referred to as God the Son, whereas he is regarded as a Prophet in the latter. In my view, most of the other divergent views are brought about by the politicization of faiths. I find this dangerous because man has a weakness of diluting the facts when it comes to the interpretation of faith in order to achieve personal gain. Otherwise, we cannot help but admire Muslims for their manner of worship.

Which other religion in the world commits to praying five times a day or fasting during the Holy month of Ramadan. Even those harboring anti-Islamic sentiments will admire the strictness and discipline practiced by its followers; something that is rarely found in other faiths. Other than Muslims banks, which other banks desist from charging interest on credit facilities? These examples bring out the human face of Islam as opposed to its detractors who prefer to create negative stereotypes about its followers.

Ever since the end of the Cold War, we have witnessed a resurgence of Islam because the once dominant superpowers have had to face growing competition from the Islamic World that controls most of the world’s oil reserves. I would not have it any other way because I don’t think the world would be better if the control was vested in the hands of purely capitalistic nations. The Islamic approach to doing business has probably made oil more affordable than it could have been. These are some of the key reasons why I can’t help, but few Islam in a positive light because it has contributed a great deal to equality and respect for fellow men by helping to reduce poverty all over the world. Moreover, in my country, there are numerous Islamic Charity organizations that contribute to the needy through the establishment of educational institutions and hospitals, for example. These have helped thousands of people to gain skills and receive medical treatment that would not be easily found in the region immediately after attaining independence from the British colonialists. As a matter of fact, I was born in the Aga Khan hospital.

My sister-in-law married a Muslim. She was a Christian but converted to Islam without any complaints whatsoever. Every marriage has its challenges, but theirs has not been due to her conversion to Islam. I have schooled and worked with Muslims. I have lived in their midst. What is the difference between two men of different faiths? Believe me, not much. Apart from the fact that their religious beliefs may differ, they are basically the same.

So, it is not for me to judge in my perception towards Islam because my faith teaches me not to pass judgment on others, but God with good reason. Islam should be appreciated because of the important role it plays in the world today.
