The Impact of Facebook on the Youth of Pakistan

on Sunday, December 30, 2012

Facebook is a top social networking site that is used all over the world. This website allows people to get in touch with friends and family members near or far, and people are addicted to using it. It not only allows a person to contact people, but it helps an individual stay informed about the world around them. However, parents in Pakistan believe that this website has a negative impact on the youth.

The negative impact of Facebook is that it is distracting students from their school work. It is something that kids can spend hours and hours on. Facebook allows kids to play games, chat with their friends, and like their favorite pages. This addiction is the problem that is the concern of many Pakistani people. Pakistan has a very competitive environment. Students here compete to get into top colleges, universities, and to get the top jobs. In order to get these things you must have good results from your exams, and you must have some extracurricular activities. Facebooking does not count as an extracurricular activity. Kids have to strive and they work their bottoms off day and night, so that they can get to where they need to go. There are not equal opportunities for every student, so the children in this country have to push their studies to the limit. The more knowledge they have, the higher they will be able to score on their exams.

Parents are concerned because Facebook is distracting kids from what is really important.

Shenila, the mother of two sons who often use facebook says, “They are not paying any attention to school because they find Facebook entertaining. Facebook cannot help them earn big bucks. Not only are they neglecting their school work, but they do not listen to a word I say. I told both of my kids to turn off the laptop and offer their daily prayers. Both of them acted as if they had not heard me. This Facebook is ruining my children. Neglecting school work is one thing, but not offering prayers or respecting my authority is something serious!”

Facebook is affecting Shenila’s sons negatively; however, not everything is bad about this social network. Students can learn about Islam on Facebook, they can get help from friends on homework and so much more. This website should not be taken in a negative sense because networking and getting in touch with people is also very important for survival. However, if parents in Pakistan are having serious problems, then there is always the option of setting strict limits or blocking Facebook for good. These strict measures may not seem fair to your child now, but they will soon learn that the competitive environment in this country does not give opportunities to time wasters.

Former EDL youth leader in court for breach of football ban

on Thursday, December 6, 2012

A leading member of the English Defence League banned from every football ground in the country has been spotted heading for Arsenal matches, the Old Bailey heard.

Joel Titus, 21, was banned from football after he led a mass brawl outside Liverpool Street station more than two years ago. At that time he led Brentford fans in a charge on rival Leyton Orient supporters.

But he has dodged the ban by switching allegiance to Arsenal and joining fellow hooligans in pubs, stations and on supporters coaches, the court was told. The leader of the youth wing of the EDL has also moved to Highbury to be closer to Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.

When he was arrested during one clash he was found with a hard-knuckle Kevlar glove – the same type of weapon he used during the earlier Liverpool Street fight.

Police are now applying for his football banning order to be extended to prevent a repeat of his behaviour. Judge Timothy Pontius will pass sentence today.

Evening Standard, 6 December 2012

Also convicted along with Titus for his part the Liverpool Street station brawl was Martin Pottle, who was jailed again earlier this year over the attack on Kingston Mosque.

In addition to his 9-month prison sentence for affray, last year Titus was slapped with an ASBO banning him from attending EDL protests and entering or loitering outside mosques.

Still, Titus does have his admirers. One of them described this convicted thug as follows: "Nice fella, not afraid to get his hands dirty (so what) ... intelligent kid – best of luck to him."

The author of that encomium is former EDL activist Andy Hughes of the Islamic Far-Right in Britain blog, whose witch-hunting anti-Muslim articles have been approvingly cross-posted at Harry's Place.

Smoking Shisha: Jeopardizing our Youth

on Thursday, November 29, 2012

The heir to cigarette smoking, shisha smoking is becoming more and more popular in society nowadays. This increasing habit of shisha smoking is emerging as a fashion statement in both boys and girls. A general misconception is that, unlike cigarette smoking, hookah or shisha smoking is safe for the health. The ever increasing trend of shisha smoking is bringing the new generation to destruction and is playing an important role in pulling down the future of upcoming youth. According to a survey by the world health organization it is estimated that 36 percent of young boys and nine percent of young girls are a part of the 25 million people who smoke shisha in Pakistan. Basically, shisha or Hookah is a water pipe with a hose and smoke chamber. The specially-made tobacco, or “flavored tobacco” is not less toxic than cigarette tobacco. In fact, it has been proven through research that one hour of smoking shisha is equal to the smoke inhaled by smoking 100-200 cigarettes. So in that sense, shisha is far more harmful to your health.

During the last few years, shisha smoking has gained popularity not only in Pakistan, but also in many other countries such as India, Bangladesh and China. Although the government has announced rules and regulations regarding smoking – specifically, that children under the age of 16 are prohibited to smoke, the government is unable to ensure any kind of check and balance of these rules and underage boys and girls are seen smoking openly. Now, this fashionable trend of shisha smoking has surpassed all limits. Shisha clubs are open in places that are accessible to the young generation.

Shisha smoking has many health disadvantages. First, it contains high levels of compounds which are very harmful to the human body such as heavy metals and many other harmful compounds which are capable of producing cancer. Shisha smoking is extremely dangerous for pregnant women as it can cause abnormalities and lower birth weights in babies. The shisha pipes which are used in the shisha clubs are also not properly cleaned so there is also the short-term chance for germs to be transferred from one to another by secondhand pipe smoking.

Because of these reasons, the future of the upcoming youth is in danger due to shisha smoking. Therefore, it is important to stop this trend in order to save the health of these children throughout the world.
