It was a few months ago in December; there was a sudden outrage across Italy. What was the reason behind that? Why did the women go against the priest? Well, the priest said that the reason for all the violence and sexual abuse was the women themselves. He said that women should be asked about it, and they would realize that it is their dressing and their lifestyle that has caused all this. The condition of houses, with children doing things themselves, and dishes and clothes left unclean all owes to women, who have not fulfilled their responsibility properly.

As soon as the priest said these things, he attracted a lot of condemn. His idea was disliked by many and provoked a lot of voices everywhere. In fact, the bishop of the area also asked the priest to stay away from all this, and fired him from his position. However, Corsi, the priest had no intentions of provoking so much dislike and anger. He soon apologized and eventually got back to his position in the church. However, his apology was not enough. It did not bring things to peace. The activists who have taken action against his words do not consider his apology as enough. They cannot just sit down like that. The priest’s words attracted a lot of discussions, and his message for the women of Italy was titled as Women and femminicidio. The latter word means the killing of women by men as the result of backward attitude.

In Italy, the condition has risen, and it is seen that a number of women have been killed, either by their husbands or their partners. Many even suffered from abuse. This is a result of men showing a sense of ownership over their women. This is sometimes as a result of jealousy, as well. A case was heard of a man who killed his wife only because she refused to come to him. In case of jealousy, it was heard that when a man saw his wife with another man, he killed her. Not just that, looking into the past, it was also seen that women were being killed by their brothers or fathers. It is not always the husband, who kills his wife, but sometime fathers also kill their daughters and brothers kill their sisters. All this is done to protect their honor. Although actions were taken, but the women right issue doesn’t seem to have been solved up till now.

Thus, even thought the priest has apologized for his saying, as he had never thought of such a reaction from the public, but still the discussions are not over. Meetings are going on, and activists are working. In fact, the priest’s words have provoked the people and reminded them of the past of the women. It has reminded them of the women rights that still need to be considered in Italy. Some say that domestic violence is something that must be solved by family, as it is a personal problem. However, when it gets to such a large scale, it does not stay personal.

The former principal of an Islamic college in Dundee has lost his claim he was unfairly dismissed for being a white Christian.

Professor Malory Nye had insisted he was forced out of his £67,000-a-year post at the Al Maktoum College because of his race and religion.

The institution offers post-graduate courses in Arab and Muslim studies and Mr Nye claimed senior figures wanted a Muslim in charge.

His wife Isobel Campbell-Nye, who was head of the English department, has also lost her unfair dismissal case.

The couple, who live in Perth, took the college to an employment tribunal earlier this year. They alleged there had been serious problems in the running of the institution.

However, employment judge Alan Strain ruled in the college's favour. A detailed written judgment will be released later, but the tribunal office in Dundee has confirmed all of the pair's claims have been rejected.

A spokesman for Al Maktoum College said: "The college welcomes the judgment of the employment tribunal.

"The ruling makes it clear that the college at no time engaged in any discriminatory activities or took any decisions based on grounds of race, sex or religion.

"The college continues to place diversity, religious pluralism and multiculturalism at the core of its higher education programmes as well as its day-to-day activities. We are now keen to move on."

During the tribunal, Mr Nye said the college had been "decapitated" and "left in chaos" after his departure.

He claimed there had been tensions in the administration team between people who were loyal to him and those loyal to Abubaker G Abubaker, the director of operations.

He said Mr Abubaker had tried to undermine him by writing letters of complaint to Lord Elder, the college's chancellor.

Mr Nye and his wife were suspended last June and dismissed just under a year ago.

In his evidence to the tribunal, Lord Elder denied any racial or religious motive for his actions.

He spoke of academic issues and internal staffing problems and said it had been "simply impossible" to consider Mr Nye continuing as principal.

He also said there had been issues of conduct and behaviour with Mrs Campbell-Nye and he believed she had gone beyond her job remit and was acting as her husband's chief of staff.

Al Maktoum College was founded in Dundee in the late 1990s with the support of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, deputy ruler of Dubai.

When they launched their employment tribunal claim last year the Nyes were adopted as a cause célèbre by the right-wing press. The Daily Mail's RightMinds blog featured a piece by columnist David Thomas entitled "Christian couple sacked from Muslim college shows our cowardly appeasement to other religions" which attacked "gutless capitulation" to non-Christian faiths. It remains to be seen whether these papers will give equal coverage to the news that the tribunal has found in favour of the college.

The Sunday Express has apologised and paid damages to a London school it falsely claimed taught an extreme form of Islam.

Northern & Shell's Sunday title published a front-page story on 12 June 2011, headlined "Spies in schools to hunt fanatics", in which it wrongly stated that the King Fahad Academy in Acton, west London, taught extreme Islam. The article, which was also published on the paper's website, falsely suggested that the academy school had been infiltrated by Islamic fanatics.

Clare Kissin, counsel for the King Fahad Academy, said in a statement at the high court in London on Tuesday: "The King Fahad Academy does not teach an extreme form of Islam, nor does it teach its students antisemitism or any form of racism and it has not been infiltrated by Islamic fanatics."

The Sunday Express apologised for the article and said it regretted the distress caused. The paper agreed to pay an undisclosed amount in damages and legal costs to the school.

Dr Sumaya Alyusuf, director of the King Fahad Academy, said in a statement: "I am very pleased that the newspaper has withdrawn and apologised for these allegations. The school can now concentrate on its mission to provide a world class international education to students through a well-balanced curriculum, which aims to produce citizens who appreciate the multicultural world in which we live."

A Muslim woman claims she was not allowed on to a bus because she was wearing a head scarf.

Mel Walker, 31, alleges she was prevented from boarding the number 70 bus from Braintree High Street at 1.30pm on Friday, despite arriving in plenty of time for the service and seats being available.

It was the first time Ms Walker of Brickbarns in Great Leighs had worn a headscarf in public and believes she was the victim of a racist incident.

First Bus say they are aware of the incident and have launched a full investigation.

Banning and criminalising the Muslim face veil tests the very foundations of modern liberal society, warn researchers from Queen Mary, University of London and the University of Sussex.

The paper 'Reasons to Ban? The Anti-Burqa Movement in Western Europe' examines the move to legislate against, and to criminalise face-veiling which has swept across the EU recently.

The European movement against face-veiling is now widespread, with calls to implement a ban, or a ban being in place, in France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and Germany.

This move from country to country makes it seem like a form of "political Swine Flu", suggests the paper’s authors, Prakash Shah, Senior Lecturer at the School of Law, QM and Ralph Grillo, Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at Sussex.
