Killing innocent people because of petty differences is just plain old brutal. I personally just get disgusted by the thought of taking a human life just for the sake of worthless pieces of paper we call money.Pakistan –KARACHI, a bomb blast; pieces of human body shredded to dust; bikers shooting random innocent people just for the heck of it. That’s what all you hear nowadays when you turn on any news channel on TV. These target killings have been a rising form of violence and have contributed to instability and insecurity all over Pakistan.

Such incidents have become unacceptably frequent in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest cicty and major financial hub. The police has failed to do anything about it. We are sitting in our living rooms enjoying hot cocoa on these cold winter nights while in Karachi, a family is probably being torn to pieces. The word doomsday can’t even begin to describe what it’s like for the families and friends of victims of such sporadic incidents of violence.

For most of the part, target killings in Karachi have been is because of political, religious and ethnic motives. Now we’ll talk about some of the possible causes that might be the reason of these killings, especially in Karachi. Karachi, being an industrial center, has attracted migrants from all parts of Pakistan. This metropolitan city has become the most multicultural place in Pakistan, serving as a home to Biharis, Punjabis, Pukhtuns, Muhajirs and many more ethnic communities. I personally believe that the theory of clash of these civilizations come into effect over here.

It’s just not possible for a so much diverse group of people to live together in peace. Furthermore, religious extremism just adds fuel to the fire. This religious extremism has manifested itself in the form of a long term Shia-Sunni conflict that has now spread to the rest of the country as well. Also, the failure of the Pakistani government in controlling the situation is a matter of great shame for local rulers. Political instability accounts to that. Best examples include the never-ending feud between the the Awami National Party that is largely supported by Pathan immigrants and the Mutahida Qaumi Movement, which consists of Urdu-speaking Muhajirs.

Now the inevitable question arises: What can we do to resolve this dilemma? Well, I think handing control of the city to the army for a little while won’t do any harm, not here anyways considering its situation. Yes, that might sound like a little dictator-biased to you, but we are running out of options. Steps must be taken or else we lose our biggest city and financial capital to these lowlifes forever.

The religious man of Pakistan by the name of Thair ul Qadri has started his Million Man March on Islamabad this Sunday. He has returned to Pakistan after around eight years of exile in Canada. There are many people that are quite skeptical about his Qadri’s intentions because he says that he wants change. He has spent millions on his advertising getting support for his part. He says that terrorism and violence cannot be permitted in Islam.

Tahir ul Qadri has been busy promoting his agenda from Canada and even speaking out to the public through his videos and books. Now he is back in the spotlight in Pakistan and is ready to take action. He is telling the caretaker administration to replace the government and carry out fare elections this time around. The government has responded to the actions of Tahir ul Qadri by saying that nothing is going to stand in the way and there are going to be timely and fair elections.

Tahir ul Qadri says that he is doing his upmost best to ensure that there is a corruption free electoral process that takes places. Qadri has said that if the election reform demands are not met by Thursday then he will stage a Million Man March to the capital with thousands of supporters following him. Malik says that he will not allow the rallies to enter downtown Islamabad because they pose a security risk and will disrupt business in the city. Mr. Rehman Malik has said that he will hold Qadri responsible if any violence or murders occur in the country.

Malik has announced that Pakistani Taliban is planning attacks on the Million Man March and still Mr. Qadri is spending a lot on television urging others to join him. Despite a lot of criticism from the government Qadri is quite intent on marching to the capital despite all the risks. It has been expected that there are going to be around one to two million individuals that are going to join in on the march. They are planning on removing the barricades that are going to be put up by the government and will be in the city until all their demands are met. There are numerous supporters that say that Qadri is doing this for the benefit of the country and is trying to make a positive change.

Golden Dawn anti-mosque posterMark Lowen has an interesting piece at BBC News on the struggle by the Muslim population of Athens to build the first mosque in the city.

As things stand, Muslim are forced to pray in cramped underground prayer rooms, in breach of the law and facing the threat of attacks by the anti-migrant fascist party Golden Dawn.

"It is a very big tragedy for us Muslims that there is no mosque here," Syed Mohammad Jamil of the Pakistan-Hellenic Society is quoted as saying. "Greece produced democracy and civilisation and the respect of religion – but they don't respect our Muslims to provide us with a regular, legal mosque."

While the Greek Church is increasingly sympathetic to Muslims' need for a proper place of worship, Lowen interviews Bishop Seraphim of Piraeus who claims that "Greece suffered five centuries of Islamic tyranny under Turkish rule and building a mosque would offend the martyrs who freed us". Seraphim, who is notorious for his far-right views, adds that "most Muslims have come here illegally" and their aim is to "Islamise Europe".

In response to the suggestion that his position appears Islamophobic, out of touch with a multicultural EU, Seraphim says: "We are not a multicultural country. We are one Greek nation and everything else is an invention of the 'new order' and of Zionism. They are trying to corrupt our character."

On the streets of Athens, Lowen finds that opinions are mixed. One interviewee opines: "We must not have a mosque here. This is a Christian country and if they want a mosque, they can go back to their own countries and have one." Another responds: "Muslims should have their temple. Greek immigrants in other countries build their own churches and perform their own religion, so it's hypocritical."

A disused army barracks near the city centre has now been chosen as a site for a mosque that could accommodate 500 people. The government insists the state-funded project will go ahead. Stratos Simopoulos, the secretary general of the ministry for development, states: "In the past, there was a fear in some segments of Greek society about constructing a mosque but we must overcome that fear."
