The Role of Women in Western Society

on Thursday, April 11, 2013

Women have been dominated by men since the beginning of mankind. They just lived to serve and obey man. The main role of women in the society was to bear kids, take care of the house and be faithful and loyal to their husbands. . They are not given equal place as men in the society. In modern countries women are kept under total male domination, these countries including Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, China, Malaysia, and many African countries.

Women in these countries are not encouraged to obtain higher education. They are not allowed to speak freely. They are enforced to dress properly according to the will of her father or husband. Most women in these countries are not given the right to take part in some activities like work, games, business etc. They are just considered as glorified house keepers.

Until recently, in some western countries women were not allowed to get higher education and take part in many activities as well, but nowadays the situation is different. Western women have various political and lawful rights that allow them to get higher education, as well as, take part in as many activities as they want. The Western world provides complete freedom to women. Like a man, she can take part in all activities.

A great ratio of women in the west are well educated. They have higher education degrees and play a key and important role in the economic growth of their country through business and government positions. Most of the western women, like men, are usually employed and earn a lot of money during their career.

As we know, every coin has two sides. Besides its various advantages, feminism has left some harmful effects on these countries. Pregnancy before marriage and other features are some of the factors in the breakdown of families in the West. Divorce is a common word in these countries

Traditional intellectual like Carlson Carolyn and Allan Graglia believe that the change of women’s role in the western world, from being a caring mother to self identified and trained professional, has shaped a communal disaster that is carrying on to take its charge on the family. There are different points of view regarding the freedom of women in the western world. Some professional, experienced and well educated liberal women in the west are quick to endorse the importance of business and employment.

While the position of women in neo-liberal western society is well established and that of great importance, there should be some thought given to the real extent of their role in society, business and family.

Existing Relation between Islam and Western World

on Sunday, April 7, 2013

Enmity in relations between Muslims and Western public is continuing to aggravate as both sides hold negative stereotypes of the other.

There are many causes that provoke anger in relationships between the West and Islam. Large numbers of people in the west see Islam as a religion that promotes extremism, which is wrong, as acts of the Taliban and other radical groups should not overshadow true Islam. Adversity in relations increased after 9/11. In the west the stance of non-Muslims was highly hostile. Many blameless Muslims were tortured, Hijab was humiliated, and men with beard were deemed Islamic Radicals etc. The conduct of the west was also severe and vicious, as they had apprehended many innocents against whom no charges were proved. Inhuman Guantánamo Bay detention center is one of the instances of the cruelty. The attempts to inflame Muslims were also witnessed such as cases of burning of the Holy Quran by a discriminatory priest and a recent offensive film which has been filmed to insult Prophet Mohammad (PBUH); furthermore this film has been widely spread over the YouTube website causing agitation among Muslims. Drone attacks, sanctions, violating domestic laws of Muslims for ‘so called’ security purposes and apprehensions of innocents are the instances which are highly responsible for widespread hatred for the west among the Muslims.

However, problems are found on both sides since many madcap Muslims also exist who don’t have tolerance and they are inclined to handle matters with fight despite presenting any logical arguments. Imposing fatwas on the west or regarding them as hell dwellers is not the stance they should hold. There are also many radical groups who mislead other Muslims into feud against the west, misstating it as Jihad. Similarly, even in America there are Muslims who exhibit inflexible behavior in their daily lives such as Muslim cab drivers refusing passengers from carrying alcoholic beverages or drugs.

It is true that Muslims are now an integral part of western society. There are a lot of examples of Muslim comedy groups, rap groups, Scout troops and magazines. Muslims have been vocal in other forms of media as well.

Relationships can be improved with the help of media and by reviewing foreign policies. Muslim and western countries’ media should join heads and organize programs in order to eradicate misconceptions and promote peace and harmony, such as VOA (Voice of America). Both Muslims and Western public should show flexibility in attitudes by giving each other room. In Muslim countries awareness must be developed among the people that all the problems and miseries they are facing are not caused by western countries. Mostly Islamic states hold very negative stereotypes of western countries, i.e. they see America as culprit. On the other hand NATO operations in Muslim countries should be minimized to the extent of terrorists only. There have been substantial killings of innocent Muslims by NATO forces which have added fuel to fire leading to abhorrence in Muslims for western countries.

Some Major Differences between Islamic and Western Banking

on Friday, March 8, 2013

Islam is known as a complete code of life. It has everything for its followers, and it provides guidance in all paths of life for Muslims. Islam provides all the details which can be helpful for Muslims in their daily life and situations. Islam gives guidance even in money matters; this includes islamic banking.

One important concept in Islamic banking is that money cannot generate money, and it is considered as Haram. On the other hand, Interest is considered normal and right in the conventional banking. This is the biggest difference between both banking methods; there are some other differences, as well.

As it is said earlier that in conventional banking interest are charged because they say that money has a value and that value increases with time - so they charge interest. On the other hand, Islamic banking has a concept that you can earn money by using it for business or investment purpose. You cannot simply charge money on money.

The other thing is that in conventional banking, the borrower of the loan has to pay the principal interest even in case of loss. This is not the case in Islamic banking; where in case the borrower experiences any kind of loss then the bank will also share the loss by using Musharakah or Mudarbah model of investment.

The other difference between both banking models, is that in conventional banking, there is no agreement made for services or goods exchange. In case of Islamic finance, the agreement is made for the exchange for services and goods. The funds are given under the salam & Istisna Contracts as well as Murabaha.

Moreover, the conventional banks use the money as a commodity that is the real cause of inflation in the market. On the contrary, the Islamic banking focuses more on giving the loan to the real sectors which invest the money in their projects. This way money is used in a real sense and is distributed in various sectors. This investment in the real sector can form the basis of economic development.

While giving the loan, the conventional banks do not make ethical considerations. They can give the loan to anyone who fulfills their requirements. It means that they are not concerned about how the loan will be used by the borrowers. On the other hand, the Islamic banks do consider the motive of the loan. You can see that an Islamic bank won`t give a loan to anyone who wants to setup a beer factory or uses the borrowed money for any other illegal activity. This way the Islamic banking is more ethical and knows its responsibility towards the society.

So after reading this comparison, you can make your own selection of the bank from where you want to take a loan. You should also look at the policies of the banks and its effects and show your own sense of responsibility. Good Luck!

Muslim Reality In A Western World

on Tuesday, December 25, 2012

As a person who has grown up in the United States, I often take for granted the liberties that we all share as Americans. While we still face obstacles ranging from equality to economics, life in general yields no complaints. Can the same be said for those that chose to come here from other places, usually in search of a better life?

Since the tragedy of September 11th, we as a culture have become hyper-sensative to those of other cultures. That statement in no means justifies the racial inequalities and barriers we place on our Muslim brothers and sisters. There is no room for and we should have no tolerance for this behavior.

Due to several reasons the Muslim community faces harsh reality in our land. One of many reasons for this is a lack of knowledge and understanding. Things that people don’t know impose fear. Fear then paralyzes normal actions and replaces them with unnatural, reactionary actions. The there;s the lack of understanding. In order to be understanding, you first have to be tolerant enough to listen to the ideas of others. That is not the case in today’s society.

Second to blame for this treatment is unfair media portrayal. In today’s world of mass media, it is easier than ever to get information to the masses easily and quickly. One click of a button and you have a platform that reaches around the world in a matter of minutes. The things we see in the media often can and will influence the way we think about any given subject. Media portrayal of this particular culture of people has been nothing short of negative. That’s putting it mildly. Stereotypes are perpetuated in the news, TV shows as well as printed media. This portrayal has lead to a fear or phobia of Muslim people  and Islam as a whole. Not only is the portrayal and fear promoted, but the increase with which this information is being both broadcast and printed, has drastically increased. All of this has helped to shape the negative public opinion that now rests on the heads of Muslims.

Lastly, there is a lack of acceptance of differences among mainstream that helps to reinforce the harsh treatment of Muslims. Now this is a practice that predates any criminal or terroristic actions we so often refer to today. If we take a look back, this practice has been prevalent all along. We can equate this racism. The two are synonymous. Judging a people or person because they offer some difference that we might not have, or they possess a thought or belief system that is different than that of mainstream. This example epitomizes the reality of life for no only Muslims but others in America as well. All of this stems from an intolerant society that refuses to acknowledge that the differences between us could be our greatest strength. If we compiled the sum of our differences and used those for the greater good, what a society this would be.

So, what is it going to take to change the current perception of society? In short, the nation. The old adage says it takes a village to raise a child. While in our culture that is not really practiced, I can assure you that its going to take a coming together of the nation to change a practice that is seemingly spiraling out of control.

University of Virginia: Martha Nussbaum berates Western Islamophobia

on Monday, November 19, 2012

Renowned philosopher Martha Nussbaum addressed a packed auditorium Friday afternoon, berating Western Islamophobia, a problem Nussbaum said continues to plague the country today.

"Once, not very long ago, Americans and Europeans prided themselves on their enlightened attitudes of religious toleration, although everyone knew that the history of the West has actually been characterized by intense religious animosity and violence," she said.

Nussbaum, a service professor of law and ethics at the University of Chicago, said blatant legislative discrimination against Muslims in the United States, France, Belgium, Germany, and Spain, among other countries, requires examination.

"Our situation calls urgently for critical self examination as we try to uncover the roots of ugly fears and suspicions that currently disfigure all Western societies," Nussbaum said.

Seventy percent of Oklahoma voters in 2010 opted to pass an amendment to the state's constitution that singled out Shariah Law – the moral code of Islam – as something Oklahoma courts would not be influenced by.

Shariah law regulates Muslim personal conduct and provides rules on alcohol consumption, dietary practices, prayer and codes of honesty in business dealings.

The amendment, approved by voters, was ultimately struck down as unconstitutional, and never went into effect.

The measure mirrors other recent U.S. attempts at religious intolerance.

Nussbaum shed light on a proposed Tennessee law that would have criminalized the practice of Shariah law with a felony punishable up to 15 years in jail. A rewritten version of the bill that did not expressly reference Islam or Islamic law, but did still carry criminal penalties, eventually passed.

In addition, U.S. Muslim women have experienced harassment because of their personal choice to wear the hijab and burka, Nussbaum said.

A female Moroccan hostess who worked at Disney Land's Grand California Hotel is suing Disney for the right to wear her head scarf during work. Her supervisors allegedly told her the head scarf went against the "Disney look" and that she would have to take a job outside of the view of customers if she wished to continue wearing it.

"What I favor in the undergraduate curriculum is that everyone should have some knowledge of the major world religions," Nussbaum said. "So I think we're lucky in a sense that we have more opportunities for this kind of intervention to learning and conversation."

The University's 15-month-old Institute of Humanities and Global Cultures sponsored the talk to enrich its program aimed at providing the structure for graduate students and faculty to further their work in the humanities.

Western misapprehension about Muslims

on Thursday, July 5, 2012

The start of the twenty first century was very horrific and atrocious. The responses from all around the world to the attacks on September 11have arrived in a way that these responses are both clashing and coalescing. In favor of all governments all over the world, the attacks of 9/11 have given a new rationalization for their existence and respite from years of liberal aggravation. The new foundation for the administration and mounting public disbursement is carrying out a universal war on violence.

An ultimatum by America to all the other governments of the world was that either those were with America or with the rebels, and in response to that ultimatum, every government of the world one by one, together with the campaigners and victors of non alliance and anti coalition in the past, lined up following the American controlled federation. After the devastating incident of 11th September, 2001it was realized that the Muslims and Islam were grouped into big stack of delusion and misapprehension and they also misapprehended the west.

Many misconceptions have been developed by the Muslims regarding the western culture, thoughts and living style. After 9/11, Muslims all around the world whether they are living in America or any other country are to a great extent doubtful and worry about the intents and goals of America in the world. There is apparently a reason at the back of this insight. America does likely to support Israel over Arab, which is the neighbor of Israel and Muslims have commended violence against the inhabitants of the world.

Some of the misapprehensions are the intellectual and some of them are theological. Ethnically, there are major disparities in how Christianity and Islam have to do with the society and government. Gender roles have also become the foundation of mystification for the Muslims. Theologically, there is a lot to elucidate on the subject of the role of Jesus. Muslims also have a misapprehension about the foundation and the conduction of the holy manuscript of the people of USA means the book of Christians that is Bible. And the Muslims are also misunderstood about the crucial religious and many cultural issues of Christians. Along with this, Muslims have perceived that America is conquering the world because it wants to attain its own objectives of dominating and ruling the world and getting the desired outcomes of the war for terrorism.

This part of the article presents a Palestinian viewpoint squabbled through the intercontinental regulation and political narration. Rasha Uthman challenges the legitimacy of Israeli work in Gaza specifying the UN ruling besides unlawful resolutions and intercontinental denunciation of Israeli strategy. She also guards the political association in opposition to accuses of fanaticism and radicalism. She is in opposition to the admired accounts of the profession that overlook the rights of the Palestinians to land and political sovereignty. It is quite important and notable that amongst all these misconceptions is the view of west a liberal hold out for the Muslims.
