Islam is the religion promoting peace, love and cooperation. It teaches faith and practice of all the relations, to which we are attached, in this world. Among those relations, the most important ones are those with whom we share some common ancestors or fore-fathers, our family members and relatives. Islam has specified a very high status with the relation of a brother in Islam. Brotherhood in Islam is emphasized at many places in Quran and Sunnah because of the importance attached to the relation between a brother and a sister, who belong to same parents and have strong bonds of love and respect.

“The blood relatives have more right to each other in the holy Book of Allah”. This shows that Islam while intending to spread peace and love among communities; it started it from within the sphere of a house where brothers and sisters have to observe specific rights towards each other. Islam attaches high status to the personality of brother because he is the heir of the parents and is responsible for bringing care to his family members after the parents have gone old. He must be dealt with humbleness and modesty, respect and care. No harsh words or strict language must be used against him since it is greatly damaging towards the status of a brother. His advice must be acted upon because he is the next to hold on the family after the parents. The religion Islam has even advised to prohibit any fights among brothers and sisters related to family matters or any other issues. A small gesture like smiling to the face of your brother is considered to be a good deed in Islam. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, “Your smile in the face of your brothers is an act of charity.”

Brotherhood/Sisterhood, as explained by Islam, cannot be replaced by any other relation in the world because it represents the ties of faith and joint responsibility towards each other as well as the parents and the family. Islam also advises to loves for your brother what you love for yourself and dislike for your brother what you dislike for yourself. The status attached with the brother’s personality is great; therefore, he must be respected and cared for, and efforts must be made to compromise and sacrifice for the sake of keeping a peaceful relationship and happiness at home. Mistakes are a part of the life of every human being and cannot be avoided so easily. Islam realizes this fact and advises the members to forgive the mistakes of brothers if any. It would result in increased ties and strong faith in the relationship.

Brotherhood should not be taken for granted. To maintain it, the rights and duties must be fully observed. Some of these rights are obligatory whereas others are recommended. These moralities are so important and bear such great consequences on the individual and society that they should never be ignored in minor matters. They must be accomplished according to the true sense of Islam.

My heart aches when I see people saying that Islam gives no rights to women and that it lowers their status, instead of elevating it. Such people say such things only because of lack of knowledge of Islamic history. They are not aware of the condition of Arabia before Islam and after it. Such people probably do not know a lot about Islam and give their reviews about the religion without proper information.

To talk about elevation of the status of women, we should first look at the conditions of Arabia before Islam. That was the time of ignorance when women were treated as articles of faith. Women had no rights, and they could be bought or sold. Moreover, a man could marry as many women as he wanted, and sometimes, sons inherited their father’s wives. Women were also given no right to inheritance. Apart from that, one major and very brutal practice of those ignorant people was that they used to bury their daughters alive. When a girl was born to anybody, he felt shame and buried her alive. Thus, there were no rights for women at that time, and they had to do nothing but suffer.

Then came our beloved Prophet (Peace be upon Him) who is also the seal of the prophets. He brought with him the teachings of Islam. God’s message started being revealed in him, and slowly and gradually the status of women was elevated.

So how was this status elevated? The burying of the daughters was prohibited. In fact, it was considered as an act that deserved severe anger and punishment. Apart from that, our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) came with a number of teachings regarding women.

We see that the Islamic teachings and laws are all similar for men and women. Where five times prayers are compulsory for men, they are also compulsory for women. Where fasting and charity are binding upon men, so they are for women, Thus; all these obligations are equally binding and the reward is also similar for both men and women.

Islam also gave women rights to inheritance and to own property. Previously women got no share from inheritance, but Islam gave them rights to inherit. Women were also given the freedom of choice for choosing a husband. Nobody can get her married to a man she does not wish to marry.

Moreover, Islam demands that women be respected. They should cover up themselves and that their beauty should not be shown to any man. Her beauty is only for her husband to see, and thus Islam made it obligatory for a woman to cover herself up when she goes out of the house. This is to make sure that no body gazes at her with bad intentions. This is also to protect her chastity. Woman are just like the jewels that are kept hidden from everybody’s eyes. This is because jewels are so beautiful that they can attract some people’s bad intentions. Same goes for women.

Muslim women

Unlike the women belonging to other religions, Muslim women enjoy a giant respect and dignity. Muslim women carry these distinguished status since their birth as these have been bestowed to them by the Islam. Islam emphasizes a lot on women’s importance, and there are so many rights which women enjoy being Muslims. In addition, Muslim women have always been very responsible and proving themselves to be not less worthwhile than men.

In accordance with the Islam, women and men carry equivalent importance. As the almighty Allah says in the holy Quran, according to which ‘among Allah’s signs one is that from yourself He created companion for you that may bring about the peace and rest of mind for you, and mercy and love between you was predestined by Him. Certainly, for reflective people, herein in fact are signs.’

Similarly, according to the sayings of the last Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him), Muslim women have been given enormous importance. According to the Prophet, treating the wife with kindness indicates the sign of perfect faith. As he said that ‘amongst believers the most perfect in Iman (faith ) is that person who, in the kindest and manners, is most excellent to his spouse.’

Unfortunately in western media and societies, a lot of misconceptions are propagated against Islam that it suppresses the women’s rights. They make such allegations that Muslim women are treated badly and they are not less inferior than the animals in Islam. But in fact, all these misconceptions are baseless and thus do not have any actual evidence. A couple of reasons can be pointed out which lead the western media and societies to make such allegations. One of them is due to their complete ignorance about the true Islamic teachings. Second, they are likely to do so due to the prejudice they have against Islam. Third, unluckily, even in Muslim societies many social practices are performed which do not adhere to Islam. As a result, it gives a bad picture of the Islamic stance on Muslim women to the world.

In fact in Islam, Muslim women are not deprived at all of the rights which are enjoyed by the men. Islam provides the women equal rights. Unlike the other parts of the world where other religions prevail, women in Muslim societies are guaranteed the inheritance rights as well by the Islam. Moreover, Muslim women enjoy certain marriage rights, mother’s rights, daughter rights and so on. Thus, Muslim women being mothers, daughters, wives, sisters or even just being common women are blessed with paramount status and importance by the Islam.

Muslim women play a very important part in the societies as well. The first person who embraced Islam was a woman, Khadija (the Prophet Muhammad’s first wife). Hazrat Ayesha (R.A) another Prophet’s wife, enjoys a dominant status in Islam due to her being an Islamic scholar and a great Hadith source. Likewise, many Muslim women have ruled their respective countries in the past, like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Turkey.

Muslim women

Islam is the best religion in the World. Islam is the name of true teachings for all People for either Muslims or non-Muslims. In Islam, there is no distinction between Men and Women. Islam is the unique religion, which assigned equal status and rights of women in contrast to Men. Woman status is the form of dignity and honor. Status of Muslim women in society is not a new issue. In western societies women awarded less dignity and honor in every field. The real status of Women described only in the Holy religion Islam.

The teachings of Islam are described by two authentic resources which include The Holy Quran and Hadeeth which elaborated by the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).

Women status in Ancient civilization and European countries:

Women considered less important specie before the Islamic era. Arabs buried their daughters alive. There were no rules for the betterment of Women. No property rights gave to the women. They were in a state of inferiority complex.

In Western and European Countries, equal rights are there for everyone but Women considered less important Personality. They give them no dignity perspective. Property rights did not give totally to women.

Women Status in Islam:

Islam gives equal rights for men and women.  The woman is a nice creation of the ALLAH Almighty. In the Quran and Hadith Status of Muslim Women is discussed in detail. In Islam, women got all the equal rights with respect to men. Some overview definition of Quran verses is as follows:

“The Lord (ALLAH) creates you from a single soul and also create his mate that might love with her“.

Status of woman can be described in aspects like spirituality, Economically etc. Paramount factors related to status include equality. There is no base about the inferiority of women in Islam. However, the Position of  the Muslim Women is unique in our system. She has full security about spending life according to Islamic teachings. Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) truly represented all about the equal rights of men and women.  Some overview of His sayings is as follows:

“The pursuit of knowledge, education is essential on every Muslim male and female “.

The Muslim women have the right to the parent’s and husband’s property, this means inheritance rights give to females. Her right cannot be forgotten. This is prime important fact. She is entitled to “Mahr” which she took from her husband at the time of marriage.  The responsibility on wives includes taking care of a husband, his property, and other related matters. The prime need is that Women give respect.

Social factors are also important related to status of Woman. In Islamic culture when a woman is not agreeing for Nikkah, then not anybody can force her to do that. This right is the very vital for the development of any person’s life. Status of Woman as a Mother is most important. Mother loves her children very much. She took care of her children in any situation. A famous saying is that “Paradise is under the feet of mothers”. Islam discussed about the rights and status of Women in the best manner.
