Most of the Taliban who claim to be the Muslims belong to Pashtunes Society. Islam always supports the education whether it be for boys or girls. According to a hadith of Muhammad (S.A.W.), it is essential for a Muslim, either a male or female, to get the proper education. Islam also says that a scholar is much better than a spiritual person. So it is clear that Islam promotes education. Then the question arises as to what the reason is to oppose female education by the Taliban. Perhaps it may be the Pashtunes tradition and customs. The Pashtunes mother produces the son to send to the wars and he practices war training in his childhood. A Pashtune daughter is to stay at home and help her mother with the household work.

All these stories seem to be rumors about the Pashtunes when we see the reality in the area. There are a lot of schools and colleges in the tribal areas, mostly the Swat. Swat could have been declared as the education capital of Pakistan due to the presence of the medical and law colleges including nursing and computer schools. Also, there are hundreds of informal beauty schools that offer on-the-job training for the poor girls who cannot afford other types of education. The presence of such types of schools does not support the theory that Pashtunes are against education.

The reality is that there are different groups of the Pashtunes, some are in favor of education, and some are against it. Both are part of the Taliban militants. The Talibans who are against education do not send their children to schools. They claim that education for girls is the tradition of the Western people to favor secularism. So they are more frightened from the female education than even the drone attacks. They think that the traditions are much more important than their lives. So they also have destroyed many schools and colleges present in the area. Actually, they are supported by the uncivilized and uneducated people using the name of Islam. So, they fear from the fact that due to education, people will become civilized and there will be no support for them in the local area.

Education is important for both men and women because it makes the people confident, civilized and  professional. It is a fact that only educated women can better handle problems. Therefore, we cannot deprive women from education because it is their basic right. The progress of any nation or country is not possible without women being educated. It is most important to stop the anti-education activities of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

In the wake of perceived threats against a mosque in Charlottetown, P.E.I.'s Islamic community asked Prince Edward Islanders to learn more about their culture Thursday night.

The Muslim Society of P.E.I. invited Jamal Badawi, professor emeritus at Halifax's St. Mary's University, to give a lecture at UPEI introducing Islamic culture. About 100 people attended.

"We hope this to be part of a process of dialogue and outreach to people from different faiths and cultures, so that we can share with them our beliefs," said Zain Esseghaier, a spokesperson for the Muslim Society of P.E.I.

Muslims on the Island celebrated the opening of their first purpose-built mosque this summer, but that opening was marred by several nasty incidents.

Earlier this month, a bottle filled with gasoline was found on the Masjid Dar As-Salam Mosque's doorstep with a sign that read "Defeat Jihad." Before that, a truck was set on fire behind the mosque, and one year ago a pig's head was nailed to a post on the mosque site, which was under construction at the time.

Within a century after the death of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) the Muslims not only conquered new lands, but also became scientific innovators with originality and productivity. The Islamic Golden Age, spanning the 8th to the 15th Centuries, saw many great advances in science, as Islamic scholars gathered knowledge from across the known world and added their own findings .

By the ninth century, Islamic medical practice had advanced from talisman and theology to hospitals with wards, doctors who had to pass tests, and the use of technical terminology. The then Baghdad General Hospital incorporated innovations which sound amazingly modern. The fountains cooled the air near the wards of those afflicted with fever; the insane were treated with gentleness; and at night the pain of the restless was soothed by soft music and storytelling.

The prince and pauper received identical attention; the destitute upon discharge received five gold pieces to sustain them during convalescence. While Paris and London were places of mud streets and hovels, Baghdad, Cairo and Cardboard had hospitals open to both male and female patients; staffed by attendants of both sexes. These medical centers contained libraries pharmacies, the system of interns, externs, and nurses. There were mobile clinics to reach the totally disabled, the disadvantaged and those in remote areas. There were regulations to maintain quality control on drugs. Pharmacists became licensed professionals and were pledged to follow the physician’s prescriptions. Legal measures were taken to prevent doctors from owning or holding stock. in a pharmacy. The extent to which Islamic medicine advanced in the fields of medical education, hospitals, bacteriology, medicine, anesthesia, surgery, pharmacy, ophthalmology, psychotherapy and psychosomatic diseases are presented briefly.In addition to the major encyclopedic works produced by such scholars as al-Razi (Latin Rhazes, d. 925 AD) and Ibn Sina (Latin Avicenna, d. 1037 AD), whose works were translated into Latin as early as the twelfth century, and continued to be studied through the second half of the seventeenth century, the major Islamic discoveries and contributions to the field of medicine include:

1) The introduction of new fields of medical research and clinical practice such as maternity, gynecology, embryology, pediatrics, dietary medicine, public health, and psychic medicine.

2) The diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of many new diseases such as smallpox and measles.

3) The qualitative development of the field of pharmacology beyond the comparatively limited earlier state of knowledge.

4) In contrast to the Greek tradition which excluded it, Muslims incorporated surgery into the study of medicine, and developed its practice and techniques.

5) The structure and organization of modern hospitals follows patterns established as early as the ninth century. Islamic hospitals had open admission policies for patients of all economic background, and regardless of sex, religion, or ethnicity. They were run by large administrative staff and could accommodate as many as 8,000 patients. They were separated into different wards by sex and nature of illness. Moreover, hospitals had their own pharmacies and facilities in which medicines were prepared, and each hospital had its own apprenticeship program where students obtained practical experience under the guidance of a physician.

The Most Famous Muslim Surgeon

Abu Al-Qaasim Az-Zahraawi (died in 428 A.H.) was the author of “At-Tasreef Liman `Ajaza `an At-Ta’leef” or “Clarifications for Non-Writers”. This is the book on which Europe relied for several centuries after it was translated into Latin. It is a 30-volume medical encyclopedia and is considered the first encyclopedia on medicine and surgery.

Az-Zahraawi was the first surgeon to perform surgical operations on blood vessels such as suturing arteries after they had been cut or joining them while they are bleeding. He was also the first surgeon to use silk fibers in closing wounds and gold ligaments in correcting teeth. He was also the first to develop plastic suturing, and he developed many surgical instruments that were not previously known. He drew pictures of these instruments, and gave details of their size and the material used in manufacturing them, such as hooks for excising tonsils.

Islam is a religion of mercy and clemency. It calls for curing the sick, relieving their pain and treating them. It commands the Muslims to search for new medicines and consult a specialized physician when they are ill. So in the early stages of Islam it was a part of Muslim culture and Muslim education to seek knowledge in the field of medical science and practice it in easing the pain of the patients.

Arabs before the spread of Islam were divided and  illiterate; they used to spent their time in fighting. They had only one good thing in common and that was the Arabic culture. But this nation was united under the leadership of Prophet Muhammad (SM) and they started gathering knowledge. And soon gathering knowledge had become a part of Muslim Culture. Both the Muslim teachers and the Muslim students pursued knowledge.

After the death of Prophet Muhammad (SM) the Muslim rulers took the charge to spread the Islamic knowledge and general knowledge. Under Islam, life sciences were so great that Muslims became masters. Muslims did not only master the art and fact of science but also it became a part of Muslim culture. Accordingly, their universities were welcoming those European students who left their countries seeking these sciences.

Besides, European kings and princes headed for Muslim countries for receiving medical treatment. The French thinker, Gustave Le Bon wished that Muslims had controlled France in order to make Paris like Toledo in the Muslim Spain. He also spoke of the grandeur of the scientific civilization of Islam as follows: “Europe is a city for (Muslims) Arabs with its civilization.

Modern medical science, though mostly developed in the West, it is basically the continuation of contribution made by scientists of the early Muslim period. Scientific approach to medical science began in the Greek period. After  the fall of the Greeks, Romans controlled the old Greek territories.

The Romans had little interest in pure science and the Greek science, including their medical science, continued to prevail  in the Roman empire. Due to the antipathy of the Romans, Greek science was gradually lost, though a pan of it survived by its translations into Latin through individual efforts. A number of Greek scientists fled to Judishapur in Persia to avoid Roman torture, and they continued their pursuit of scientific activities under the patronage of the Persian rulers.

When the Muslim rulers  conquered the eastern Roman empire (Byzantium); the Muslim scientists saved the Greek knowledge from total destruction. Muslims first translated all the book of science into Arabic language  then available, and later began to develop science further. Muslims contributed most in the fields of philosophy, general science, technology and especially medicine. Islamic education pursed both the Islamic knowledge and science at a time. Their contributions to the basic medical sciences has previously been reported.’ In clinical sciences their contributions were most remarkable in the fields of general medicine surgery ,therapeutics and ophthalmology.

Muslims  thus made extraordinary advances in medicine through their research. The first important physician was Abu Bakr Muhammad Ibn Zakariyya Al-Razi (d. 923), known in Europe as Rhazes. He wrote voluminously on many scientific and philosophic subjects, and over fifty of his works are extant. His greatest work, Al-Havi, was translated into Latin as the Continens, (the comprehensive book). It was the first encyclopedia of all medical science up to that time, and had to be completed by his disciples after his death. For each disease he gave the views of Greek, Syrian, Indian, Persian and Arabic authors, and then added notes on his clinical observations and expressed a final opinion.

The greatest writer on medicine was Ibn Sina or Avicenna. He was also one of the two greatest Arabic philosophers. His eminence in medicine was due to his ability to combine extensive theoretical knowledge and thought with acute clinical observation. His vast Canon of Medicine (Al-Qanun fi’t-Tib) was translated into Latin in the twelfth century and was used much more than the works of Galen and Hippocrates. It dominated the teaching of medicine in Europe until at least the end of the sixteenth century.

There were sixteen printed editions of it in the fifteenth century, one being in Hebrew, twenty editions in the sixteenth century and several more in the seventeenth. Roughly contemporary with Ibn Sina was the chief Arabic writer on surgery and surgical instruments, Abul Qasim az-Zohrawi (d. after 1009), usually known in Latin as Abulcasis.
