U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann says President Barack Obama's administration has embraced what she calls a bid by Islamic fundamentalists to bring the U.S. government in line with Islamic law.

Bachmann, R-Stillwater, made the comments last weekend in an interview with Jan Markell, a Maple Grove-based Christian minister with Olive Tree Ministries.

Bachmann created national controversy earlier this year by claiming the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist fundamentalist movement that rose to power in Egypt, had penetrated the U.S. government.

In the latest interview, Bachmann warns of a 10-year plan crafted by the Organization for Islamic Cooperation, which includes 57 nations, most of them in the Middle East. Bachmann, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, says the OIC plan aims "to criminalize worldwide any speech that is disparaging of Islam" in accordance with Sharia law.

What she describes as a "purge" by FBI and other Obama administration officials of materials deemed offensive to Islam shows the administration is "embracing" the OIC plan, Bachmann said.

"That's what I spent my whole year doing, was talking about this issue of what the OIC was trying to do with their 10-year plan and all of these efforts in the Obama administration," Bachmann said. "The only conclusion you could make is that they are embracing the 10-year plan and are supporting it."

The interview was broadcast on Jan Markell's weekly radio show, which has the stated purpose of "discussing current events in the light of biblical end-time prophecy". U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., was named Thursday to the citizens advisory board of an Ann Arbor-based legal center that fights for conservative Christian causes.

The appointment of Bachmann, who dropped out of the presidential primary in January, brings another high-profile conservative to the Thomas More Law Center, which increasingly has focused on Islam in recent years. In May, the center named U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., whose views also have sparked controversy, to the advisory board.

"I am pleased to join forces with the Thomas More Law Center," Bachmann said Thursday. "They are in the courts aggressively fighting the internal threat to America posed by radical Islam."

Richard Thompson, the center's president and chief counsel, said that Bachmann "puts country before politics."

"She understands the threat of radical Islam," Thompson said. "We share her concerns regarding the stealth jihad that's being perpetrated against the United States."

Dawud Walid, director of the Michigan branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said that Bachmann is a "perfect fit" for the board. "Since Michigan has been a target of nationwide of anti-Islam campaigns, it makes sense that Bachmann would join a Michigan-based group ... openly hostile to the Islamic faith."

The Thomas More Law Center has acted on behalf of mad Pamela Geller and Qur'an-burning pastor Terry Jones, whose loopy views it entirely shares.

In an interview with WorldNetDaily earlier this year Richard Thompson stated: "Islam is more than a religion. It is a political ideology that regulates every aspect of human existence and calls for the Islamic domination of the world. Since radical Muslims know they can never defeat our military on the battlefield, they devised the strategy of internal subversion."

He added: "Like the ancient Trojan Horse welcomed within the city's gates, Islam has entered America disguised as a religion. But its ultimate objective is political: Destroy America and establish an Islamic nation under Shariah law. So while America sleeps, they are awake and subverting our government, as well as our public schools and universities. And we will not be deterred from our efforts to stop them."

I can't say I'm generally an admirer of John McCain but the statement he delivered on the floor of the US Senate today in defence of Hillary Clinton's aide Huma Abedin against the paranoid accusations of Michele Bachmann and her colleagues really is worth reading.

Here's an excerpt:

Recently, it has been alleged that Huma, a Muslim American, is part of a nefarious conspiracy to harm the United States by unduly influencing U.S. foreign policy at the Department of State in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist causes. On June 13, five members of Congress wrote to the Deputy Inspector General of the Department of State, demanding that he begin an investigation into the possibility that Huma and other American officials are using their influence to promote the cause of the Muslim Brotherhood within the U.S. government. The information offered to support these serious allegations is based on a report, 'The Muslim Brotherhood in America,' produced by the Center for Security Policy.

To say that the accusations made in both documents are not substantiated by the evidence they offer is to be overly polite and diplomatic about it. It is far better, and more accurate, to talk straight: These allegations about Huma, and the report from which they are drawn, are nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable citizen, a dedicated American, and a loyal public servant.

The letter alleges that three members of Huma's family are 'connected to Muslim Brotherhood operatives and/or organizations.' Never mind that one of those individuals, Huma's father, passed away two decades ago. The letter and the report offer not one instance of an action, a decision, or a public position that Huma has taken while at the State Department that would lend credence to the charge that she is promoting anti-American activities within our government. Nor does either document offer any evidence of a direct impact that Huma may have had on one of the U.S. policies with which the authors of the letter and the producers of the report find fault. These sinister accusations rest solely on a few unspecified and unsubstantiated associations of members of Huma's family, none of which have been shown to harm or threaten the United States in any way. These attacks on Huma have no logic, no basis, and no merit. And they need to stop now.

In a June interview with radio host Sandy Rios, Bachmann said: "It appears that there has been deep penetration in the halls of our United States government by the Muslim Brotherhood... that there are individuals who are associated with the Muslim Brotherhood who have positions, very sensitive positions, in our Department of Justice, our Department of Homeland Security, potentially even in the National Intelligence Agency."

Following that interview, Rep. Keith Ellison, a Muslim himself, said that "if [Bachmann] has sources for this type of information, she owes it to the country to reveal them to the proper authorities, but definitely not in this way... if she doesn't have this type of information, she should not be whipping up fear and hysteria about a very important manner."

But Bachmann is now naming names. Late last month, she sent letters to the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Justice, State, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence raising concerns about Muslim Brotherhood infiltration.

The St. Cloud Times provides details of Bachmann's letters, which are cosigned by four other Republican Representatives:

The letter to the State Department singles out Huma Abedin, a deputy chief of staff for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and asserts that three of Abedin's family members are connected to the Muslim Brotherhood. It says Abedin's position affords her access to Clinton, and adds that the department has "taken actions recently that have been enormously favorable to the Muslim Brotherhood and its interests."
