Bribery in islam

on Wednesday, October 24, 2012

“And do not swallow up your property among yourselves by false means neither seek to gain access thereby to the judges, so that you may swallow up a part of the property of men wrongfully while you know.” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:188)

Bribery is no doubt one of the biggest curses that exists in today`s environment and is eating the roots of loyalty and justice slowly and steadily. People have become so mean and self-loving that they don’t even think about their loved ones when it comes to their self-related benefits. There is no fear of Allah almighty left in our hearts and no desire of earning the happiness and blessings of the creator of all of us. This is the reason that bribery is very common among all of us, and everyone in some part of their lives either takes bribes or gives bribes to satisfy selfish goals. The most common forms of bribes are:

  • The bribe that is given to a judge to earn his favors relating to the judgments.
  • A bribe that is given to solve a problem illegally
  • Sometimes a person has to pay illegally for those things that are not provided for him.

Bribery in islam

It is a sad fact that these days corruption is at its peak in all major parts of the world, and because of this, people have to take the support of bribery even for achieving things that they deserve. Considering the bribe that is given to judges, you can easily guess that here money or gifts are offered to the judges for inclining the verdict of a case in a direction and criticizing the approach of the opposite party without any sound base. This spreads in justice and you must be aware that injustice gives rise to rebellion, and people are forced to use wrong means even to get what they deserve. Because of this and many other reasons, bribery is not considered as an act worth appreciating in Islam and very strict punishments are enacted for those who get indulged in such activities.

Our beloved the Prophet PBUH highly disliked this act and said:

“May Allah curse one who gives a bribe, one who accepts it and one who acts as an agent between them.” (Safinat’ul-Bihār)

There is no other place for corrupt people other than hell, and we all know what a deadly place that is. One more important thing worth considering here is that not only the person who offers the bribe will be punished, but also the one who takes it.

Because of this reason it has been mentioned by the Holy Prophet PBUH:

“Beware of bribe! It is nothing but disbelief. The one who is involved in bribe will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise.”

Considering the above discussion it can easily be guessed that bribes, as well as the act of bribery, are nothing less than a curse, and we should steer clear of them.
